Does anyone here have a sumatra with black skin? I ordered some for this reason - but no black skin (black feather yes!)
Fla-native,
Do you have a picture? I have black skinned chickens similar to what you're describing. Mine are mutts, but I adore them.

I've crossed black sex-linked hens to my dark cornish roos. The majority take after the dc and have a rounder body and are either all black or have the dc pattern. They're all under 2 months so I can't say how they'll do once it's time to butcher... but I'm pretty happy with them so far. I've...
Not sure about the possible hen house issue (guess it depends on your flock), but they should be just fine without a Roo. He'll make really good stewpot dinner though

Live, we used to de-feather for an additional $2.00 (just to cover the propane and electric), but that's more work then it's worth! Our male muscovies go for $25.00 live too Even with the slower growth rate, I find that I enjoy raising the muscovies over the pekins. They're calmer...
Wow Mader! I had to do a triple take --- I thought those were my chicks! I have all the same mixes and colors! ... and is that a black skinned (or blue skinned) chick in the background of that 1st picture?
sounds good. I sell pekins for $16.00 straight across. Some people complain and some say that it's a good deal. I guess it depends on what kind of customers you have.
S & G poultry : http://www.sandgpoultry.com/ ... really nice folks. I ordered all my meaties from S & G and JM last year. I recommend them both and birds are all great quality!
Gotta agree with Cloverleaf. I have a dark cornish cross roo who was just fine when he was penned in with all the other boys. I decided to let him have his own harlem. The next day when I went in to collect the eggs - he attacked me from out of nowwhere. Quick moving sucker too! Completely...
I had a similar idea a couple of years ago and it worked out great until the little baby corn grew in. My chickens would jump up and eat the silk. Once the corn got closer to harvesting size, they would take a little nibble out of every corn within their reach often exposing the ears to pests....
Hi Spamee,
I've raised both Pekins and muscovies for meat. The pekins dont handle containment as well as the muscovies, but they make it to the butcher block months before the muscovies. I feed them free choice all purpose or flock raiser, grains, table scraps and let them free range. The...
They look really nice! They look just like mine young'uns ... but I cant honestly say what breeds I really have (thai, shamos, asils or mixed) since my stock is from my dad and he's breed them for as long as I can remember. We occasionally get a bird from an uncle or cousin (supposly thai) to...
