Slanted floor - yes or no

I'm hoping to build my first quail enclosure soon. It will probably have a wire bottom and will be located outdoors. If I slant the floor to a pick-up area in the front, I will need a predator-proof door on the pick-up area. Is the slanted floor worth the trouble? When looking at cages online I...

    Young Leghorn Quit Laying

I have 9 hens ranging from 11 months to 4 years. The youngest 4 started laying this past spring. One of these, a buff leghorn, quit laying about 2 weeks ago. I know because she is my only white egg layer. I know that she is not hiding eggs because I did not let them out of their secure run for...

    New to broody chickens

I have had chickens for about 4 years and never had one go broody until now. I have 9 hens ranging from 9 months to 4 years. No roosters. About a week ago, one of the youngest (Sussex) wanted to sleep in a nest box. I’ve had chickens try this before and my way of breaking the habit is to block...

    Advice on additions

As I posted in another thread, I lost 2 of my 4 girls to the heat earlier this week. I had already planned to build a larger coop and get more chicks this spring but my 2 remaining girls look so lonely I have just about decided to get a few more now (AND in the spring when I build my new coop)...

Adding to a very small flock

Until this week I had 4 hens (1 ½ years old) in a movable coop in my backyard. This past Monday when the temperature reached 106 I lost 2. One was outside in the shade; the other had just laid an egg and died in the nest box. The surviving 2 are doing fine (they now have a fan for hot days) but...

    Heat

I lost half of my flock today (2 of 4), I am assuming that it is due to heat. I added shade, a fan, and a pan of water for wading for my remaining girls. Any suggestions for them?

Switching from grower to layer feed

My 4 girls are 19 weeks old. I hope to have my first eggs within the next several weeks. I still have most of a large bag of grower feed. Will it hurt to keep them on this while offering oyster shell once they start laying (until I use up my grower feed), or should I go ahead and switch?

    Bottomless coop?

I am planning to build an A-frame chicken ark, similar to the Catawba or the Boughton. In looking at different designs, I ran across an interesting one on Youtube. From the outside, it looks much like a traditional chicken ark, but it has no floor except for the nesting box. The chickens fly up...
