    Skunk attack??

Just moved my hens to my new home over July 4th. Gave in to the lure of buying more chicks when the August chicks rolled into the feed stores. Moved the newly fledged kids into a chicken tractor so they can get grass and sunshine and more exercise. Lost a chick last night to something that dug a...

Why won't my Hens lay any longer?

My eye was caught by 2 things in your original post...as many have said it is most likely a seasonal shut down, but the 2 things I took note of is sneaky egg predators. Is it possible there is still one lurking? Second, that you redid your nest boxes. Most hens are territorial about their boxes...

I will take slow roads as I have never hauled chix before ( just horses) and I am in the Midwest so will probably be doing all this in a raging blizzard, lol.

    packing up the girls

Thanks for your questions, my new home will be w/in 20 min drive of current one and I am hoping to borrow a 4 horse stock trailer so space should be about equal to their normal coop. I want to have the fence mostly installed so as soon as they get to the new place they will get to start...

    packing up the girls

I have the opportunity to move to my dream home on a 5 acre parcel. I am beyond thrilled, but still losing sleep worrying the logistics of relocating my perfect coop and 70+ hens. Can anyone offer advice? I am going to contact a shed moving service for the 8x8x12 foot coop, but will have to take...

NE Ohio,2 americauna roos and 1 RIR roo

Why? Don’t see much use for state threads- have never read them- use this site only for research and finding or rehoming birds. Do not need social network or “rah rah sis boom bah Ohio’s the best” chest beating. Work 2 jobs, plus egg business, no idle time.

NE Ohio,2 americauna roos and 1 RIR roo

All 3 well behaved boys are last spring's hatchery chicks. One Americauna is a breathtaking slate blue and scarlett, the other Americauna reminds me of a calico cat coloration, and the Rhode Island Red is a very stately gentleman. All three get along and are in robust health. My city zoning does...

2 yr old gander needs friends

I got a tufted American buff gander as a watchdog for my layer flock as my city ordinances do not allow roosters to do their rightful job. This poor guy hates chickens and they despise him so he needs to find better accommodations. He is a complete gentleman to me but does not care for my adult...

I used a heating pad in the brooder for the first time this spring, loved it! Started w the pad over a half round basket that was originally for guinea pigs/ rabbits. When they outgrew that @ 3-4 weeks, I set the xl heating pad over a milk crate and rigged a low perch inside the crate. Mostly...

Comment by 'chixmaidservice' in article 'Poultry Ownership and Dealing with Loss (From a Tenderhearted Farmer)'

Thanks for such a wonderful article! I feel the same, everything seems to be out to get my flock, but they take so much joy with them when they scamper out into the fenced backyard. I have 2 good roos, lots of brush and thick tree cover and blackberry thickets along all the fence lines. I have...

40 Hens in an 8x8x8 coop??

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Bought hens once from a man who lived in a large city. Small city lot, very close neighbors both sides and behind. Thought to myself that I couldn't be in the right place. He walked me to a small single car garage that could not have been more than...

40 Hens in an 8x8x8 coop??

I have a similar set up, free range on 2 acres all day, feed and water outside of coop, same number of hens in similar dimensions. I have built multiple levels of roosts and do still have my original small coop that houses about 6. The only problems I forsee you having depends on how hot your...
