What do you do with hens that lay bad eggs or no eggs at all?

Yeah, I have a brown leghorn that rarely lays. She's always been a very light egg layer, but she hasn't laid an egg in a while now and she's only two years old. She also isn't popular with the roosters. She's pretty, though. I just keep her as a pet. The other hens make up for the eggs she...

    Hen with nasty crossbeak

I have a crossbeaked Mille Fleur roo. I noticed his beak as a peep, and as he matured it got worse and finally stuck at about a 90 degree angle. Some people say to cull them, but I can't cull any chicken, since I raise them as pets and for eggs. He is just adorable and likes to get on top of the...

Mixed Rooster -- What is it?

Thank you all for these very interesting suggestions! The lady I got him from has all of those breeds or mixes of them, so I think you're right on the money with the combos. He also has a very sweet disposition, which helps to make him my favorite. Thanks again!

Mixed Rooster -- What is it?

I bought this guy as a 2-day old chick and watched him transform into this beautiful rooster. He came from a farm where the chickens all intermingle and end up hatching in all of these great combinations. Does anyone have any idea what breeds this guy might consist of? Thanks in advance for...

    Live food!

Good to know they like to eat crickets, because I went into the coop to check on my girls the other evening and suddenly saw big, juicy crickets hopping around in the pine shavings. Unfortunately, the girls were roosting for the night and uninterested. I guess they were saving them for breakfast.

The Eggs Came!!!!!!!!!!! Tomorrow Is Day 1

What a great idea to have your hen hatch them instead of using the bator! I'll have to remember that, if I order eggs again. Enjoy! I love waiting on eggs to hatch.

Can anyone please help advise on my beloved Benny the oegb!!Update

Very sorry for your loss. They are beautiful. I had a pretty brown leghorn pullet die this summer with the same symptoms your Benny had. I never knew why, but whatever she had didn't seem to affect the other pullets. Sometimes, they just don't have the strongest genes and catch stuff very...

What do I do after hen hatches her eggs?

Thank you for the other advice on free-ranging the chicks. Since it's Sunday and the whole family is home, we will keep an eye on them and see how it goes. I am working on containing my coop and chicken yard today, so hopefully, they will go in there soon and worries can subside. :o)

What do I do after hen hatches her eggs?

Thank you for the great information about just leaving the eggs alone for a little longer. The mother has left the nest with the two that hatched and begun showing them the ropes around the farm. It's very cute. We will keep an eye on the other three eggs for a couple more days to see if...

What do I do after hen hatches her eggs?

They're here! While my hen is a Buckeye, she and her sister hang out with Henry, my Dominique. It appears these first two look more like Dominiques. I'll post the pictures shortly, as soon as I figure out how to post them....

What to do about the roos?!? LOTS of ?'s.

My three grown roosters were all aggressive, but the one has mellowed, now that he's almost two years old. He doesn't try to attack me anymore. Advantages -- My one remaining rooster is very sweet to the two hens he hangs out with. He waits patiently as he lets them eat first, kind of acts like...

    My first chicken

Aww, she looks very sweet. Is she a Jersey Giant? I got my first chickens a year ago, and I was very surprised by what great pets they actually are. Enjoy!

How do you know a real broody hen?

They almost seem like they've taken a vow of silence and fasting for 21 days, and they're just aching to cut loose and say how they really feel once the 21 days is over. I keep telling my broody hen what a great mom she is to encourage her. She's probably thinking, "yeah, yeah, this ain't no...

Chicks are hatching, how to get stuck shell off of one

You should be able to take a clean sponge and dampen it with warm water to get the stuck pieces off. Try dribbling the warm water on the stuck pieces first, being careful not to drown chick or get on chick's nostrils. This will help moisten the dry pieces. Then, gently swab the stuck pieces to...
