Flock of Two on Strike! (?)

My little urban flock of two suddenly stopped laying. One is a Breda, about 6 or 7, who takes a LONG winter vacation and isn't the biggest layer but she's fairly consistent this spring and summer so far with maybe three a week. The other is an Easter Egger about 4 years old who has been a DYnamo...

Shells super thin (she crushes them) and raw, red belly/vent area

Thank for the ideas! I will try the egg shell. Without knowing a lot (I just have a few hens and she is the one remaining from the first brood) I think it's dietary since she does lay an egg most days. Is there an amount of egg shell (or oyster shell that's right? I've just been mixing it maybe...

Shells super thin (she crushes them) and raw, red belly/vent area

My New Hampshire Red is about 6 years old. She's had thin shelled eggs for a few months, often cracked at the end, sometimes really broken. She doesn't want oyster shell but many days I feed it to her in peanut butter and that seems to help. Lately, when she hasn't had oyster shells (we ran out...

    Chicken drinking too much?

So sorry I wish I could help. That does not sound good.

Could 90 degree heat alone have killed her?

My healthy 16 month old Easter Egger hen died this afternoon pretty suddenly. Yesterday it was maybe 88 degrees and she was fairly sluggish, hanging out in the shade, drinking kind of a lot. I noticed that after she laid an egg she sort of stood over it for a while in the nest box, until I...

    Curious about bedtime drama

I have two pullets, Easter Eggers who are now laying lovely small eggs. I also have two other hens. The young girls still get pushed around some and both do some avoiding/escaping some nights instead of dealing with the roosting order inside the coop. One (Goldie) sometimes goes to roost on the...

Will do. Thanks again for your input and ideas.

Listless, runny poo and now vomit . Sad girl.

thanks, Richtman Ranch and coach 723. The vet who visited in June felt did a physical exam (crop, etc) but is not an avian vet. I made an appt. for one (avian) this Sat but it's a long car ride, hard to know if it is worth it. She drank water this morning (and maybe later when I was gone) and...

Listless, runny poo and now vomit . Sad girl.

Her eyes and comb look pretty good. Her feet have had what I think is mites (her coop-mate has mites and I have treated her, they are at bay but still there I think), though her lifted scales are all right at the front of her toes. Didn't get a good photo. Tried. She has gotten thinner. Her...

Listless, runny poo and now vomit . Sad girl.

Hi Helpful Chicken Folks, My Matilda (who was super hearty and at the top of the heap) started acting listless in June. A vet visited and did stool sample tests and found nothing unusual. I gave her electrolytes with a dropper and she got much better. She's been ok all summer though never...

Listless on and off for a month

Thanks for the links. I have no experience with feeling crops but there is nothing special there nor was there yesterday... seems normal to me. She hasn't laid for a month. I gave her the runny mash again with a dropper and some yogurt. I don't live near a feed store that would have...

Listless on and off for a month

My awesome, strong, top-of-the-flock Australorp, Matilda, has been listless on and off for a month and the last few days she seems worse. About a month ago she was not eating much and very sedate for two days. I vet I know came by and said she feels/looks ok. She took a poop sample (it looked ok...

    Breda foot feather problems

Yes the scales are quite raised. That has been going on for a while but this bare legged/feathers out issue is new (though she also had some of this in the fall)

    Breda foot feather problems

Hi My breda has feathers that seem to have fallen out and some that look like new ones coming in, pin feathers. . Her legs are half bare and look awful.. the feathers now start higher than they used to. She picks at her legs and drew a little blood earlier today. She is also walking timidly and...

Better to get a sick chicken eating seeds or not eating much at all?

Just an update: Sadly my two healthy girls got killed by an escaped neighborhood dog. Very traumatic. But now my sick girl has had an easier time getting better and better, and she's pretty much back to normal, happy and exploring, laying eggs. I took your advice (Sonya9) about eggs (strange!)...

Better to get a sick chicken eating seeds or not eating much at all?

Thanks both of you for your input. (The vet is 2,000 miles from me but did a free phone consult! Very nice.)

Better to get a sick chicken eating seeds or not eating much at all?

Thank you. She's not a silky, she's a "Cherry Egger", like a New Hampshire Red I believe. Thanks, I will try some eggs too. I am pushing her feed and then the BOSS when she is not wanting to eat more feed, sometimes.

Better to get a sick chicken eating seeds or not eating much at all?

OK the answer seems obvious but I want some feedback. My girl is very pecked, I think b/c she is not well. She does the backwards walking thing some people call moonwalking and she is missing lots of feathers. I am keeping her separate from the pecker and I am keeping her inside in the basement...

    hawk or feather pulling?

I have three girls who have had a lot of feather pulling issues since last winter. Tried pinless peepers, gave them LOTS more space, but one girl (who kicks her peeper off even if it makes her bleed) still pulls the feathers of one other. Today I came home and saw that my pecked/pulled girl had...

Pecking order change, not laying now, tail down some too.

Thank you. I am going to do the dewormer. I will send photos but she's not so extreme looking (luckily)
