I've been very suspect of another outdoor(outside of their coop/run) nest. I finally saw my hen go into the nest. I let them out in the morning and lock up when they go to bed. I live on National Forest Land, so, there's lotsa hiding places. 6 of my 9 hens are pretty good about keeping in the...
I would like to remove the band from my new gosling. Unfortunately they are identical and I need to mark one. I was thinking a of a mark/dot on the top of the foot with permanent marker?
My 2 other goslings (5 weeks) were much nicer than I anticipated. Couple of nips, but, nothing serious. I...

Thanks for the ID. Bantam just keeps getting stuck with these birds. My friend picked them up for me and was a little forgetful with the name of them. He has 1 to. I had a feeling I was being in-accurate with my description.

Thank you for the ID. If you are not an expert, you...
It is the 2 chickens that are white/black/grey. You will see them @ 18 seconds. They have feathers growing down their feet like bantams.
Thank you BYC.
This is a video. Click on pic to see.........
EDIT: They are 5 weeks old.
This site is referring to ducks, but to be safe, I thought I'd drop it by here. May be something that can affect waterfowl in general?
Botulism
Symptoms: loss of muscular control of legs, wings and neck - hence the term limber-neck. Birds are unable to swallow.
Cause: toxins produced by bacteria...

One of those in Silkiechicken's picture is a crab ring. Never had a problem using either one from a dock, or boat.
I was only pointing out that this type would be my first choice.

These and my geese have an impressive growth rate. Compared to my first post, here is 17 days later. I think they are both girls. I can see their feathers coming in around the body and they have different shades of brown.
Any insight? If they are both girls, are the chances of them leaving...
First let me say that I looooooovvvvveeee crabbing. Especially in Newport. Second, I don't eat anything that lives in water. YUCK!!!!!! The two traps you showed are both wrong for your average dock/bay crabber. Crab rings are cheap (20-30 bucks) and much easier to use...
I have come across a few urban legends and was hoping to confirm a couple.
Males are the "hissers"?
Males have a broader neck?
Males generally have a higher voice than the females?
Can anyone confirm these, or, add to them?
UGH!!!!! It's supposed to be 25 for a our low tonight. I'm sticking to my guns. I had to "shoo" them into their doghouse, but, they have been in since.

lol!!!!! I have been out there a couple of times already. Admittedly once using the "red light" function on my headlamp. The doghouse does have a door I made for it out of a throw rug. My wife is also a bit concerned. I think I'm going for it. With a couple/few more flashlight checks...
Well, they have miraculously taken to the dogloo. They have been using this run during the daylight hours for the last couple of weeks. Even on a couple of nasty/cold days. They never used the doghouse. They have been in it for the last hour or so. I still haven't decided if they will stay out...
Mine(2) @ 4 weeks seem to be skittish still. Makes for a pain when I'm trying to round them up to bring them in at night. They love greens. I have found that to be the best way to their hearts yet.
It is still getting around freezing here in Central Oregon, but, things are starting to look better. It is my understanding that waterfowl can tolerate colder temperatures and sooner?????? I also came across some reading that suggested toulouse geese are very tolerable of colder temperatures...
I ended up doing the 'ol round up last night.
So, with the thought of them just "getting the hint", seems to be a good way to teach them to get back into the coop when they are running around the yard. As long as the food/water stays in the same spot.
