Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

A young woman came to Cameroon as an exchange student. Since she hadn't managed to really visit the country, I invited her to go with me for a week to the remote village where I had been living. She was very keen. But knowing how life is there, I asked her is she was OK with eating meat, even...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Actually, I wonder if some fruit IS artificially colored...maybe not cherries, but I can't tell you how surprised I was to discover that oranges aren't very orange. Most of the oranges from even grafted orange trees here in Cameroon have either a dark green or a modeled orange and green skin. I...

    Straddle leg??

While this surface is slippery (the poult was put here only to take the photo), even on non-slip surfaces, this poult can't stand up. In addition the neck tends to be weak with the head flopping around. It hatched early Friday morning, and never managed to stand at all. While fairly active, it...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I live in the tropics and the hens can't avoid roosters...a friend once left her eggs on top of her kerosene fridge...some weeks later she wad confused to hear a strange peeping in her kitchen....

    The Duck Thread

Update on the duckling...I got some vitamins (I give them fairly often already, so I didn't think that could be the problem) and the duckling is much better. It still wobbles a bit, so I'll keep it apart a little longer. Since I have a long weekend coming up, I might try to reintroduce it to the...

Was planning on picking some up at the vet's tomorrow (not open on weekends where I live).

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I had Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner as well as Omelet and Salt-n-pepper. My favorites were a pair of nearly identical hens I called Rum and Nutmeg...but nobody seemed to catch what I was alluding to...

Comment by 'Njinja' in article 'Common Muscovy Health Problems'

While this is an old thread, is anyone there and can answer a question. Anyone know what would cause a Muscovy duckling (3-months), suddenly became so unstable on its feet that it flips over onto its back frequently, and has difficulty righting itself? Other than this weakness, it is lively...

    The Duck Thread

Update: The duckling has been separated from the rest of the flock, but its condition hasn't improved. It is lively enough (not listless at all), and is eating and drinking some, but is very unstable on its feet. It will easily flip over onto its back and not be able to get up. This weekend...

    The Duck Thread

Hi everyone, I live in central Africa and have had Muscovys for some time now and have had a lot of success with three ducks hatching and raising their ducklings. My black-and-white duck has hatched four clutches since January 2013. Unfortunately, my chickens and turkey hen like her nest and...

Is it normal for two hens to go broody together???

Something happened to day that reminded me of a two-hens-on-one-nest incident I had last year. One of my hens laid a clutch of eggs and was incubating them well. Shortly before they were to hatch, another hen decided to lay her eggs in the same nest. I promptly removed the new eggs. Now I work...

Chickens died overnight. Is it safe to eat them?

I'd eat them. Too late to bleed them, but clean out the guts and wash the meat and cook very well. Definitely check out the smell. And since cats are fastidious and natural predators (rather than carrion-eaters like dogs), I test suspect meat out on them. If my cat will eat it (raw--so maybe...

Is it normal for two hens to go broody together???

It's not ideal, but two hens (even of different sizes) can hatch and care for chicks together. It happens a lot with my birds. The major problem is if they fight over the eggs and break some. I currently have a hen and a Muscovy duck brooding together...sigh

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Living in a place where almost everyone puts on heavy sweaters or jackets if it gets down to 75 F, I am soooooo glad I'm not in the US this winter! Still I do have a funny story. Some years ago, I had a visitor from the US who wanted to see what a *real* African village was like. I warned her...

Any ideas of what breeding has gone into these two?

Thanks for your help! I looked up black copper marans and I do see a resemblance in the hen. I bought her because I liked her looks. Breeds don't really matter here. I was curious since any on this site speak about various breeds.

Any ideas of what breeding has gone into these two?

While most of my chickens are African "village" chickens --no-maintenance birds which entirely fend for themselves-- I needed a new rooster and came across this fellow. He is an "improved" race chicken, but no one really identifies breeds here. Any ideas? I also at the same time bought this hen...
