Any advice on a suspected broken toe? She's a little gimpy but is still bossy within the brooder and is eating, drinking and moving just fine. Her middle toe is bent at a slight angle. Should I leave it alone? She doesn't seem to notice and neither do the other 15 chicks.
The video is unavailable...but it sounds like spraddle leg. I had one with a similar problem that eventually passed from something else unrelated to the leg. The article below will give you some tips.
Spraddle Leg
My Meyer chicks are now almost a month old. I ordered 12 pullets from the Rare Breed Assortment, one pullet each from the following: Salmon Faverolle, Black Copper Marans, standard Blue Cochin (which I was thrilled to get an actual blue and not a splash or black), and a Barnevelder.
They're...
Sweet PDZ mixed with a construction grade sand. We just had rain here (strangely in July), and although it wasn't a lot it was enough to make the chicken yard stink. Covering my yard isn't an option as it's 10 feet wide and 30 feet long. If the chickens and ducks want coverage then they go hide...
I would get at least one other duckling to grow up with the hatchling. And keep them separate from the grown duck until they're old enough to fully go outside safely with him with no supervision.
Then you are not familiar with livestock guardian dogs which thrive on being outside 24/7 and are excellent guard dogs of both property and animals and need little human interaction.
First off, I haven't ready every single response. Secondly, this dog has not 'turned predator', this is a very difficult breed to handle and is being mis-managed and is doing what any bored high-energy dog would do in the same situation.
My advice to the OP is that the next dog that comes to...
Which is what gender? The front duck (Puddlefoot) has an outright loud quack. Daffy, the other duck, has a quieter and raspier "half quack". Daffy leads Puddlefoot to the water and to food and always waits for Puddle to finish, as an example of behavior. Daffy is significantly heavier and...
My five are currently 13 weeks along with two ducks who are the same age. Their regular feed for the moment is Nutrena All-Flock which they all really like and this week I'll be switching them to the Scratch and Peck Grower, after that bag they'll be ready for the layer.
Treats: strawberries...
I'm near Sacramento, CA and we hit at and over 105 in some places today. My chickens have a 10 foot by 30 foot run that they're in during they day (I live in town, so no free ranging!). I have two 5 quart feed pans filled with water which a couple of them stand in along with their regular water...
I'm near Sacramento and my Meyer order will be here between July 22nd and the 24th. So far I've heard nothing but positive reviews and the two times I've had to contact customer service, they've been nothing but stellar. The feed store chicks (from Ideal) were not the quality I expect, I do have...
Totally my thought as well. As far as the trapper claiming that a coyote was mad is a little far fetched. They don't hold grudges like humans just because you altered your routine. A lot of animals are opportunistic eaters and whatever creature did this just happened upon the open door. I think...
I'll go back out this evening and get pics from those angles. I rehomed two roos that she has grown up with and she's a bit frantic right now, going to let her settle down a bit.
Thanks! My boyfriend named Daffy, I somehow came up with Puddlefoot but it was actually a mistake. I meant to name him Puddleglum (from The Silver Chair, Chronicles of Narnia).
