    Help! Partially Formed Eggs

This has been going on for the last couple of weeks to baring degrees. This is what I found this morning. They get layer feed, about an hour of free range time each day, and I recently added oyster shell. Both of these shells we together leading me to believe the same chicken laid both. I'll...

    Brittle Egg Shells

I got some oyster shell yesterday and put it out for free choice. This morning it was all gone and these are the eggs that I found... A beautiful, perfectly shaped egg and beside it a rubbery shell egg. I'll put out more oyster shell this afternoon. If anyone has any other ideas, I would...

    Brittle Egg Shells

I give them layer feed. They have been laying for about 3 weeks and that is about how long they have had the layer feed. I haven't given them anything supplemental - other than yogurt and the weed/insect they get when they free range.

    Brittle Egg Shells

Last week, one of our girls laid 2 eggs with extremely brittle shells. Of course, they were eaten. Not sure if they were under developed or broke in the laying process. I gave them yogurt with crushed egg shells. (This was the first time I gave them egg shells.) This morning, there were 2...

    Chickens sleeping in nesting boxes

When we first put our chickens in their coop, they went straight to sleep in the nesting boxes. I read not to allow them to sleep in the nesting boxes, so I boarded them up. My 6 girls are now almost 18 weeks old and we have just opened the boxes back up and put in some fake eggs. When I...

How do I get my chicks to go into their coop?

I was very excited when we went out to put the babies in their coop last night and found 2 of them had already made their way up and were snuggled in for the night! Celebrating little victories!:D

    Finally finished

It is 4 ft X 4 ft. And the run is 4 ft. X 8 ft. These are pictures that my son took of the inside. It is a little rough, but you can see the rack that we made for roosting on the left and the nesting boxes straight ahead. (The lid is open.)

    Finally finished

Hahahahaha! My 7 year old son LOVES the chickens! He is the only one that can stand up in the run - and he could stay there all day. We have some quarter inch wire that we are planning to put around the bottom on top of the fence. That will be for another weekend. We are locking them up in...

How do I get my chicks to go into their coop?

It was finally warm enough for me to put my 8 week old chicks outside yesterday. They do not yet know how to climb the "ladder" to get up I to the coop. Last night and tonight at dusk, we had to go out and physically put them into the coop and close it up. Are we doing the right thing? We...

We have finally finished our coop and run. The chicks seem to be comfortable in their new home! All we have left to do is hang the food and water.

    What do you think?

Thank you alll for your input. We are enjoying our chicks very much. Can't wait until the snow is gone and their feathers are in so we can get them to their coop.
