one of the birds laid this egg, and the shape, the swirl pattern on the tip, and the wrinkles has me curious. is a funny looking egg like this one just something that sometimes happens, or is this an indication of something wrong with the bird? the shell is hard. is this egg safe to consume?
i'm gonna try to capture some vids of the geese making the various noises they make, and would love some opinion about the vocalizations and or behaviors.
any ideas on the winny sound?
Our two 11 hour old Silkies!
I went out to candle the 6 eggs that the white Silkie had been sitting, and lo and behold one of them was pipping. This morning, I went to check on the eggs and once I got hen out of the way (she DID NOT want to move) I found a black AND a partridge chick staring...
It's not what I expected, but I caught this guy (or girl).
I placed the trap at the fence corner, where I had seen the tracks and feathers. I used the remaining sardines in this trap with a big marshmallow. It isn't dead in the above pic, it's playing possum. As I moved around, he...
No raccoons yet. I did manage to catch my stray cat twice, though, in the smaller trap. It's not my cat, but rather it was here when we moved in. Anyway, I haven't seen any problem with this feline, it stays under the house, catches mice (tons around here), and would routinely get into the...
Lularat, I'd have to find the instructions for an exact recipe, but here's what I remember, off the top of the head:
everything super clean. cracks eggs into blender, blend. pour into a fruit roll sheet of the dehydrator. dehydrate at 155 degrees F. until dry and crispy, about 8 hours...
Mohawk and Duckie out in the tractor. I never removed them from the geese, they no longer get pushed around. Matter of fact, they seem to give as good as they get. 37 days old.
The two newest in the storage room. Stuff, on left and Puff on right. Just over two weeks old.
Good pic of my...
Waggles the goose. 37 days.
Shazbot, African goose. 37 days old.
Hekyl, 16 days old here, and Jekyl below also 16 days old.
Shazbot and Waggles unsure about the snow and ice. Not quite feathered yet, but they seem to be feathering in from the ground up. They are in the tractor...
the phirst egg!
I just couldn't put it off any longer. Some eggs were given away, some chucked into the woods because we didn't collect them for a week, and the rest started filling up the fridge. I had to eat one. Plus, the kids wanted to try one, too, but only after I had (how...
Well, in 6 days I've lost 3 birds. The first vanished without a trace. The second involved some blood, and a trail of feathers. The third had several blood spots, multiple feather piles, and something resembling a carcass. Thanks to the recent snow and ice, I also have raccoon tracks. I...
When I make a mistake, I own it. A recent post I made was offensive and unnecessary. For that, I am sorry. I let a lapse in good judgement impose on other's enjoyment of the forum. I apologize, and it will not happen again. Thanks for reading, Phickle.
A few pics of our dogs for the dog lovers out there.
This is Cocoa, a Terrier of unknown breed. She was abandoned on the side of the road, and rescued by the owner of the local feed store (non-corporate, family owned) that we frequent, where they were being offered free to a good home...
These little kits are now 17 days old. They are furred, open eyed, ears up, and quicker than a stopwatch. One ended up being black interspersed with tan/silver hair (likely name: Speckles). One is dark gray, named Popcorn, since anytime it is touched or moved, it jumps. The last is light...
Well, I ended up buying more chicks. A lot more chicks. I guess I'm a sucker for small, cute, and fuzzy! Except for a couple of silver-laced wyandottes that I pick up Tuesday, I am done with buying chicks. I'm out of brooders, old towels, and patience. OK, maybe not patience- I just love...
At that rate you'll have kits in no time. You need to be mindful of over-breeding though. Since a doe can get pregnant twice at the same time, and carry two litters at the same time, perhaps finding a way to cut down on the unrestricted mating is in the future? Not only does a doe have a...
