Thanks Mac -
I've paid around $14 for 50 lb bag of Black Oil - in the shell - for the bird feeders. I don't recall seeing shelled seeds except the small bags - around $1.38 / lb.
I would guess there's a good chance of getting seed from your 'crop'. Not sure I'd be too happy to see my flower...
My girls have had free access to oyster shells since they started laying.
When they first started laying I some of those (last Sept).
They are on an egg layer mash with vitamins and such.
They are now 14 months old. I've had a couple dirty backends - bathed and trimmed to get that off.
This...
Is it possible they are just too young to figure out where home is yet? Trying to recall how big they are at 3 months - is the roost too high for them?

Hi - Here's a link that talks about the life cycle - causes - what to do about them. No, you won't have to send your other girls to Death Row. But they will probably get infected and need treatment.
Hope this helps and relieves some of your fears.
Please, keep us posted on your outcome...
Hi new here - but a word of caution:
I've heard you don't want to keep the eggs if you give garlic (if it's not toxic????) - it will affect the taste. I'm sorry, I don't recall just where I saw that - burning the candle at both ends lately.
I'm rather new to chickens - but found some wonderful...
I'm not sure if this will help, but ...
my girls did that a few times when they first started laying (last fall).
I was thinking it was part of 'getting started'. I believe you stated your girls had just started laying 3 weeks ago?
There's some really interesting information on eggs at the...
