gifted chicken - breed and/or gender?

The boy didn't think that she was laying yet, but he had quite a menagerie, so no real way of knowing. I have only had it (her?) For about 2 hours. Thanks, Amanda

gifted chicken - breed and/or gender?

It's about the size that my BA hen was at 15 weeks. The young man that I got it from said that he didn't know the age or breed, but that, "she's probably a hen." Any thought? Thanks! Amanda

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Amanda, I . Lolomise you that fermented feed did not cause you chicks to be roosters.    :lau    Join in more.  It's fun and we get to know one another.  Phew! :-)

    Hello from Maryland!

Update: I found a home for the roosters. In return I got this chicken: Pic #2 The 10 year old boy who gave it to me said he didn't know the age or breed, but said, "she's probably a hen." Any thoughts on breed and gender? Right now it is about the size that my BA was at 15 weeks. I will also...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Hi! I ferment my feed for my 6 chickens. I use one bucket, mixed feed, a dollop of ACV, and water. Mix fresh in with the old about once per week. It's been almost 19 weeks; i started them as chicks on day 3. This thread has been very helpful! I can't say whether I like it better or not, but I...

Five roosters available on the Eastern Shore of Maryland

4 Black Australorp & one Mix. 4 are friendly, the mixed one is not. All 5 are 18 weeks old. Eat them or keep them, your choice!

    Hello from Maryland!

Update: TSC will refund the money, but doesn't want the roosters (of course!). We are working on re-homing them. No luck so far. I am not morally opposed to eating them, but have no experience with slaughtering and plucking, and frankly don't want to try in this heat...so the...

    Hello from Maryland!

I think that I only have 1 hen. All 6 of my chickens are pictured in this thread. (The 2 in the background of the 3rd pic are roosters, also, right?). All 6 of them have slate legs. What does that indicate to you? So the BA bin was mislabeled at TSC - and we did not know enough to realize...

    Hello from Maryland!

Thanks again for steering me in the right direction. Let's see how I did: Black Australorp hen? Her comb was black until 2 days ago. BA rooster? Not so sure on this one. Rusty collar says BSL pullet...tail, attacking of other chickens, unfriendliness toward people, and gravelly attempt to...

    Hello from Maryland!

Thanks for all of the input. I will post pics of the entire flock tomorrow, but looking with fresh eyes, my newbie guess is that I have 4 Australorp roosters. Hopefully I am wrong (again).

    Hello from Maryland!

One has the copper collar, one has a tiny comb but is all black. The other 3 are also all black with no rust, yet. Red combs, but no crowing. I will get more pics tomorrow. I only had this pic because the DH is trying to rehome. I am bummed right now...do you think that I have any recourse...

    Hello from Maryland!

Percheron chick, I think that you must be right. I keep getting hung up on the literature that says that BSL cockerels are barred, and this chicken is not. I trusted TSC to sell me BSL pullets. So... What type (breed) of chicken do you suppose it is? The whole reason that we got BSL was to...

    Hello from Maryland!

Here she is...crows every morning at 5:30, for an hour. And crows off and on all day. I am wondering if perhaps she was mislabeled and is some other type of breed altogether?

    Hello from Maryland!

Hello, everyone! I have been lurking for over a year, and thought that I would finally introduce myself. I am asilcox from MD - a first time flock owner. I have 6 black sex links that I have raised from chicks. They are 18 weeks - I'm hoping that they begin laying soon! Unfortunately, despite...
