My husband actually had the machete in hand last night and I said "oh, we'll just let him go way out in the sticks" and I made I'm put it in a bucket. UNTIL, this morning!!! And now that I know that **** thing ate all 19 of my very viable chicks I am going to machete him myself!!!
Well, we bought 17 acres where the previous owner sold day old chickens (we were told she had hundreds at a time), so this is more like a chicken barn :/ It needs a bit of fixing up and we are doing it as it comes, but we thought they were pretty secure and haven't had any problems for 7...
So last night I went to close up my girls in the coop and found a 6 ft TX rat snake snuggled up in the nesting box!!! We took him out and that was over... I thought!! This morning my sweet broody mamma hen, who was about to hatch a HUGE clutch of 19, got off her nest and started eating. They...
Does anyone have suggestions on growing fodder in TX heat? I don't really have room in my house and everything I'm researching says 65-75 degrees. If anyone sprouts for their chickens through Texas summers, I would live to hear how you do it!!
Oh
I want to go so bad! lol.
I'll be in Houston though.
Can you take pics?
If you're allowed, I'd love for you to share them...:)
I've been seeing signs all up and down my neighborhood

I'm sure they allow pics...after all they are showing off what they've done ;) when I'm done with my...

Have your chickens been having a field day with June bugs?
I had a bunch of them get caught in a birdbath every night because it is located by a light that is on every night. So now I have every water holding container I could find under that light...I think I harvested about a pound of them...
And tomorrow (night of Wednesday 23rd) there will be a meteor shower. I'm sharing because I missed the Eclipse last week and I am not going to miss this one (and don't want you to either, in case you hadn't heard of it)
I really can't believe it's not the standard. Maybe expense is the issue, but I was wasting so much pine chips by changing the bedding all of the time and it takes very little sand. Bonus+++ no fire hazard if your using a heat lamp!!
I know it's been a bit since this post and my chicks arE HUGE now, and very much at home outside in the coop. But I have since hatched and started over with all the fun baby stuff again. This time I used paper towel for 2 days then I put a half inch layer of sand...they LOVE it, and do do I...
Good luck with your HOAs!! We ended up moving out of a master planned community because they would not allow backyard chickens. Hope that the rules can be made a little more flexible for our little gals ;)
My neighbor's dog made 100 times more noise than 5 hens could make. Hopefully this forum...
Hey y'all!! I live North of Dallas (by McKinney) in Leonard ;)
We just bought acreage and are settling in with about
- 40 chickens (light brahmas, Easter eggers, Jersey giants, Barred rocks, RIR's & Black Australorps)
- a few barn cats
- 3 sweet dogs (unless you mess with their chicks or ppl)
-...
Has anyone tried to do PVC pipe feeders in the brooder? The chicks are still in my bathroom as they where getting out of my "chick pen" inside the chicken coop and the temp in TX has been NUTS!! Anyway, I am building an actual brooder for them in the coop and it will be big so I am trying to...
Ok, I MAY have figured out why I don't like them as much as others.
My bag says premium pine flakes and fine mix. Does that mean there are lots of fine shavings in with the flakes or are they saying that it is a very fine quality. I didn't even think about it because I asked the feed store for...
I have never used "horizontal nipples" is that the same as a nipple cup? Is that what they call it? Mine are just a little pole sticking out, there is no cup to catch anything. I'll try mine and see if they can figure it out :)
