Well, the last 2 evenings I let the little girls out in the run with the big girls. Last evening there were a couple of the bigs that chased , pecked and ripped out feathers!
Tonight they did still chase and peck but it was a much easier time. They seemed to mingle a bit easier ! I know they...
I think it may be helping actually. I just looked out a bit ago and it's almost like they are "grazing" together ! ( of course with a fence between them though. Lol)
This is what I saw...
Thanks! I hope it helps as well!
It's been a frustrating few weeks not being able to let them out. And then when I did having to catch 6 chicks to put back in a safe cage wasn't fun!
I've been trying over the last 3to 4 weeks to introduce my littles to my 4 month olds....they have spent the last few weeks in a dog crate inside the chicken coop. The big girls haven't really bothered them until I started to let the littles out to mingle...welllllll needless to say it doesn't...
Thank you very much for your advice ! I hope that she can make I through this.
We don't have any dogs in our area other than our own. And he is really good with all our girls. Have yet to see a raccoon but we do live next to a wildlife preserve so I'm sure here are some. I did have a fox here a...
Today I noticed one of our girls had been bit by something. Whatever it was took a rather large bite from the back of her neck. At first I thought her feathers were just wet from the rain we've had but realized after she had been kind of off on her own that something more was wrong.
We put a...
Thanks ! :-) the coop isn't totally done yet but enough they can stay in their. I have to finish off the nesting boxes yet and trim work and outside paint but it's getting there. Girls were just getting wayyyy to big for their brooder.
We got 6 more white leghorns the other day too. Just...
Our 8/9 week old girls got to free range for the first time today. We put them in their new coop on Tuesday evening and decided today was a nice day to let them explore !
I was worried they might wander off but they haven't gone more than 5 feet from the coop ! They are loving being free !
Yes I will. I'm not rushing to do it as we will free range the chickens mostly. It will be more for when we are not at home during the daytime. I am "mr mom" so I am home most of the time. :)
Yes they are (or at least look) fully feathered. I was thinking about the brooked on the porch idea as well for the night. Tonight and tomorrow night is supposed to be 55+ and 70s during the day. Then down to 27 on Tuesday night. I should have the coop finished for Tuesday night though.
So I decided to go a different route with our chicken coop / shed conversion !
After inspection of the old shed I decided it would need some extra help to make it worthy of using.
So I decided to just start from scratch !
I found a nice design I liked and made it a bit larger to accommodate...
Hello all!
This is our first year raising chicks. Our girls are now 6-7 weeks old and I am just finishing up their coop. Should be done tomorrow.
I removed the heat lamp a few days ago and they have been fine without it. Today is a beautiful day outside (about 70) so I moved their brooder to...
We also had an old dog crate out back but it was stuck in the snow and ice. So I didn't have much of a choice. Lol
It's ok though.. I had fun building it !
