I had a most interesting discussion with a few students pursuing their masters in poultry science last week. They were completely on board that changes should be made within the commercial poultry industry on poultry treatment/management, and agreed that the steps taken to manage avian influenza...
We literally had an egg shortage due to idiotic government policies. Since 2022 we have culled almost 117 million chickens.
There are better methods to handle these issues. ANY flock can be infected as the virus is carried via wild birds.
Tell that to the Ostrich farm in Canada.
The officials in Canada just slaughtered an entire flock of ostriches……. all because some of the birds were ill with avian influenza last year and recovered.
Instead of studying the birds and finding a potential treatment, they killed them all…...
Because of the mishandling of the lab created avian flu, I would never notify anyone of issues with my flock.
It makes zero sense to commit to 100% euthanasia of livestock, when we are not conducting mass eradication of the wildlife that carry the disease. Instead of conducting wholesale...
Just be aware that registering your location with the government opens your animals to be confiscated and potentially destroyed if the gov chooses to. Perfect example would be the avian influenza…..
@LtDanFan good luck. I had 4 call ducks in town, tried to get the ordinance changed and failed. Of course once I moved they changed the ordinance to allow chickens. :barnie
So glad I have some pullets in the flock; it is nice to get some eggs right now.
Been doing some hiking around the...
Never had an issue; but we don't have it on in the winter either as the potential for predators is quite low. We use it to contain the birds in the winter.
As far as hawks; providing enough cover, making friends with the crows, and having a good roster are all helpful.
Looks like the latest...
I highly recommend Electric fencing to protect your flock. We have had no predator problems outside of an occasional hawk. A little bit of a cost up front, but totally worth it. The flexibility to move the fencing is such a bonus too.
We bought the trailer and just needed to close the openings and add the roost and chicken door. We left all the lights on so we can use it as a small animal trailer if needed.
The big coop behind is the OG coop. We built a prefab shed on top of a hay wagon running gear.
After the ‘Rona debacle; I hold little to no faith in any report stating something is harmless, especially concerning a company known for creating agent orange and partnering with a company that worked on creating the chemical weapons of WWII. If it does not belong there in the natural state of...
It would be safe to assume that plants treated with glyphosate will contain residuals of the chemical. Our grain crops are contaminated; testing completed on products made from oats, wheat, etc. have found to contain glyphosate.
Chicks are growing like weeds…. looks like there are at least...
There are 8 Whiting True Blues (unsexed), two Barred Rocks, and 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes. I am down to 16 chickens, and since the majority are six, time to add more to the group.
The Lav Orpington Roo that remains in my flock is going to the chopping block. He is such an idiot, he is not even...
Getting spoiled the last few weeks in California. Nice to visit on someone else’s dime if you can pull it off.
Trying to get chicks, and completely unsuccessful at the moment. Need to start replacing the aging flock who are now 6.
Unfortunately my big bruiser Marans Roo did not survive the cold snap…. We think he had a heart attack or something similar. He was fine yesterday morning and by evening he was gone…. The best dang roo you could ask for. He protected his ladies as well as you would expect, and was respectful to...
During extreme cold (like crazy -20 temps) I mover my ducks indoors; otherwise they had their heated dog bowl available all the time… never mattered to them what the temps were.
Going to put the chickens in lockdown tomorrow morning. Shut all the doors and add some new bedding. My poor roo does...
