Im in western WI I have fertile eggs. I sold 2 doz earlier before first cold sap, still cold and not going above or much above freezing and she got 23 out 24 hatch.
I have the variaties you mention aside Delaware. Some of my hens are mixed. i also have cinnamin queen and wyandotte and a easter egger . 17 hens.
I notice the farm fleet in La crosse gets there chicks on Fridays. By Monday, Tuesday they will usually start discounting the chicks ( if they have any left). Last year picked some up for .70 each.

Thank you for the reply! I found some eggs. I will keep you in mind if I need more. I haven't decided if I want more chicks yet.

I'm just getting started in my research on backyard chickens. My city currently forbids any chickens and I have been encouraged by the city manager to bring it up on the March 26th council meeting. However, her "encouragement" amounts to the following...

"You can be on the agenda, and have action discussed (which will probably be “no” due to the ordinance, and we had other requests)

Or you can do a public comment, there is no action, you are planting a thought."

Unfortunately I am not one to engage in futile attempts to influence city hall when they will surely give me a "no" to a discussion of their ordinance. So I am seeking information only for if/when they are forced by the state to allow limited flocks (WI Assembly bill AB42).

Specifically, I'd like to know if there are any small backyard flocks within a couple hour's drive of my home to witness a well managed/maintained flocks. I am in Niagara. On the WI/MI border, 90 minutes north of Green Bay, 90 minutes east of Rhinelander and 90 minutes south of Marquette, MI

Nice job on the cabinet EagleEyes. I would need to chain it

That was my thought, soomeone come by in a truck and take the whole thing. Someone would have it at their next patio party full of pop and beer.
About 7 years ago had cooler in front house I had washed and out drying for the day and someone stole it. I am 1/2 back on town road and yah couple other people on the road. Just cheap basic cooler.
Always wondered if the delivery guy got it.

I dont have it exactly figured out. I had 20 chickens thru winter, Now down to 17 got rid of 2 roosters, bit rooster heavy. Now 1 rooster 17 hens. Average 8 eggs or so a day now. Sell eggs 3.50. Couple nieghbors give me 5.00 dozen. Best eggs a person can get so I am told. Anyway with the molt and lack of eggs thru winter, though I did have 4 or 5 new hens come in so after the molt I did get couple eggs day. Than about 3 day starting in late Jan. More new hens came in.

3.50 is not even abreak even on feed I dont think..


I use 2 5 gallon pales with ports for feed. When really cold chickens really go thru the feed. 3rd to half pale in a day, now not even a quarter as they are free ranging.
Anyone ever figure how much their eggs cost for a home flock here?
Yes there is alot of variables.

But I decided that I'd charge $3.00 a dozen.
I buy farm & fleet crumbles and I also buy my local mills layer feed, that they make/grind that's just up the road from me and my chickens prefer that 3 to 1, and it's $10 for 50 pounds.
i've been giving the eggs away to friends and family and neighbors for years. So $3 a dozen is more than that.

Yep, it's hard to figure out with all the variables like you said TOR. Like you EagleEyes, I give most away. It is something that makes me feel good.
We have feed, equipment, labor (alot of that), bedding, housing. It truly is a labor of love. I do think $5 per doz
would cover feed cost. Plus, this year I ordered chicks
instead of hatching my own chicks. Another $60 of added
cost.
I do enjoy being a poultry fancier enough to warrant the expense.
