Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I agree with BBL4. and I could go further with my opiniion , but not on an open forum like this.
the less government involvement the better. the younger generation is falling in line. i grew up when there was more freedom than there is now. we had ducks in town with no permission needed. our neighbor had pigs. another neighbor had cows , chickens and horses. a friend of mine had rabbits.
a high school teacher had pheasants, this in a town of 40,000 people.
we don't need big brother.
the outbursts of chicken diseases are generally with the the commercial flocks. if the byc flocks get sick it is because of them. IMHO

I'm not talking about other countries. I heard what Canada did, and other countries as well.
We literally had an egg shortage due to idiotic government policies. Since 2022 we have culled almost 117 million chickens.

There are better methods to handle these issues. ANY flock can be infected as the virus is carried via wild birds.

I think we all could go round and round about the govt and how they or even the public handles things. This country is FAR from "free".

How is everyone liking the fresh snow fall? I can personally say, I wasn't ready. I came home from bumming yesterday and had a little flock of sad faces looking at me because their water buckets were froze almost solid. I was mortified. Got they heated bowls out and switched to rubber tubs-before ya knew it the flock was using them as little hot tubs. :idunno I contacted someone for some good wheat straw for hut insulation and bedding for the winter. Now the chores shift from changing kiddie pool water daily to making sure everyone stays warm enough at night and has thawed water. Been thinking about a snow fence too, last year I was shoveling 4ft drifts to get everyone out of their huts. That sucked.

Is everyone else ready for winter?

I had a most interesting discussion with a few students pursuing their masters in poultry science last week. They were completely on board that changes should be made within the commercial poultry industry on poultry treatment/management, and agreed that the steps taken to manage avian influenza were not following scientific methodology and were extreme. Refreshing.

We didn't get any snow here, yet (Shawano County) but did deal with the frozen water as we didn't have anything plugged in for the outside pens. Now we do.

I also found a deal on these if anyone's interested. They are mini Thermo Plugs that turn on when it's 32°F, and off at 50°F. We have three of the original Thermo Plugs you can get at TSC, but they have gone up to $15 now. Four for $11 sounded like a deal we'll try. Shipping on that particular deal is two weeks though.

Now we'll be having a bit of a heat wave the next few days! 🌞

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO look at that nifty thing!!! I may have to look into those. Don't the heated dog bowls have a thermostat thing in them? I think mine do...but still. Would be handy to have.

I am ready for the heat wave!! I think we are starting our Christmas lights this weekend. Not turning them on but taking advantage of the warm weather to get them on the trees and the house. The HOA (my fiance) goes a touch overboard with Christmas lights outside. It is a ton of work but he is proud of it when it is all done. I get fired when I try to help. :lau Or maybe I purposely get all flighty and get kicked off the job on purpose...I will never tell. LOL!

The ducks and geese seem to be enjoying the weather-more so than the 18 deg mornings we have had as of late. Yuk!

Enjoy the weather!!

Yes, those heated dog dishes and buckets have their own thermostats, as well as the heated nipple buckets.

We put them on the cozy coop radiant heaters in the growout pens and have four buckets with fish tank heaters. They are very low wattage but run 24/7 otherwise.

I have been ready for winter a few times already
but i seem to be finding something else to do every day.
I received a truck load of rabbit manure. had it dumped on a pile in the garden on the cover crop of oats. today i will take the tractor and knock the oats down and spread the manure.
reading about all the frozen water makes me glad I don't have livestock any more.
no snow here yet.
have to move a few things in the big leanto so i can put the tractor in there. Annie wants her garage back.

That's funny. I've gotten ready for winter a few times myself and tomorrow I'm going to do it again.
Yesterday I put the plastic on the chicken run. So that's done I think.
Plugged my water heater so that's ready for the winter.
Tomorrow I'm going to pressure Wash the John Deere mower and put it away for the year.
And then put the pressure washer in the basement.
And probably blow the water hose out with air. So if I want to use it during the winter I can.
Still getting 1 or 2 eggs a day from my 11 chickens, something better change pretty soon, or they might be in big trouble.😁
