Growth in closed water system... Help!

We have a closed water system (as good as you can get in your backyard setting), where water is automatically pumped via outdoor faucet timer into a 5 gallon bucket (located in the coop), which feeds down to a pipe with nipples for our chickens to drink. With it being so hot out I figured I'd...

    Fowl Pox or Favus?

Our sick girl seems to be doing so much better. Her tail is up and she's acting more like her old self. No idea why, but hey! We'll take it!

    Fowl Pox or Favus?

One of my chickens started looking poorly on Monday (April 8). Tail down and lethargic. We've had very healthy chickens and no problems for a few years now, so it was definitely a surprise when this one started acting sick. I know chickens are great at hiding illness, so when we notice...

    Mushroom Like Growth on Beak?!

Hey there, I have searched through the other posts about beak growths and just didn't see anything similar to what we are facing - so I'm posting here. Late this spring we purchased 3 Cuckoo Maran pullets from our local feed store. One of these pullets has developed a strange growth on her...

    columbian wyandotte?

We bought her from a local chicken guy who gets his stock from hatcheries. Looks like he ordered columbian wyandotte's but got some variation. We don't mind. Hedwig is beautiful and has a great personality so we are very pleased with her.

    columbian wyandotte?

I think you are absolutely right about the Delaware thing! I looked up that breed and she looks very much like that type of bird. Her tail feathers are black and white striped as are her wing feathers (when you pull her wing out all the way). It's dark now and our hens have all gone to bed, but...

    columbian wyandotte?

We were told when we bought this pullet that she was a columbian wyandotte, but when I researched the breed I learned that they are supposed to have a flat-ish comb sort of like a rose. Our bird has a regular stand up type comb so I'm thinking she's not the breed we were told she was. Any one...

Is my chicken sick? Something wrong?

I've searched through other threads and just can't seem to find anything that matches my chicken. Crowbar has had her tail down for about a month and her butt is dirty, but she is showing no other signs of illness or distress. She eats fine, hangs out with the other chickens, runs around after...

    Just got our first eggs!

After months of waiting and hoping and having no idea what we were doing we have finally found our first eggs! We are so excited! It's been a crazy few months with some pretty steep learning curves (we lost 3 birds along the way) but now I can say that it was all worth it. I love our chickens!

    Pullet or Roo?

Awesome. Time for me to make a call to the farmer who sold them to us as pullets. Maybe we can exchange them. Thanks everyone for your help and patience with my neurotic multiple posts. We just started our backyard flock this March so I am totally a newbie and really have no idea what I'm...

    Pullet or Roo?

So, I keep posting on this and I don't think anyone is "listening" anymore. That's ok, cus I can use this as a chronicle of my journey to discovery. :) After doing much more research I think I'm 80% sure that Thelma is actually a boy. I'm still not convinced that Louise is a boy, but time...

    Pullet or Roo?

Both my white leghorns will occasionally charge each other, and my black sex-link pullets, with their neck feathers fluffed out. Almost like a cobra. Does that make them males for sure, or do the leghorn hens do that too?

    Pullet or Roo?

Not old enough to lay yet, we aren't allowed to have roosters in my city, and "she" only crows when we first let them out of the coop in the morning. Our other leghorn doesn't crow and seems a bit skinnier. Pics below: This is the one I would have thought might have been a roo, but "she" is quiet.

    Pullet or Roo?

Supposed to be leghorn, which is why I'm not sure. The leghorn hens have such huge combs and waddles. This one doesn't have the extra toe/hook on the legs that roo's have, so again, I'm not sure.

    Pullet or Roo?

We were told by the farmer we bought from that this was a pullet, but "she" crows in the morning and I'm not convinced that we got a girl chicken. Getting ready to crow in this pic. What do ya'll think?

    Droopy tail feathers

The farmer said that they were 4 months old when we bought them back in March, but I think they were a little younger than that. I anticipate egg laying to start sometime in the next month or so - based on the development of the size and redness in their combs and waddles. If it's a weird...

    Leghorn hens?

If you go to McKinney Trade Days (3rd Monday Trade Days) they have chicken farmers there that sell all kinds of chickens. We got our black sex-link and leghorns there.

Droopy Tail Feathers - Chicken Seems Fine

Something weird is happening with one of my black sex-link hens. She hasn't started laying yet, and she had the most fluffy and beautiful tail feathers of the 4 that we got a few months back. Shortly after adding 2 leghorn hens to our flock, Crowbar's tail basically disappeared. I figured that...

    Does my pullet look healthy?

I'm also new to backyard chickens, but from what I've read you shouldn't give pullets layer feed until after their first eggs. Continue to feed them the crumble until they start to lay. The chicken farmer that I bought my pullets from also says this. Apparently the extra calcium and other...
