These are our week old chicks from the local feed store. We thought about ways to make a home for them out of wire mesh but it seemed too much trouble for such a temporary home. So, their home was a garden cart covered with hardware cloth in the garage. The heater light rested...
Sorry, I wasn't clear. The chickens have their own coop on the other side of my backyard lawn about 30ft away from the cat duplex on my paved patio on the back of the house.
I covered the cat house entrances with curtains. I installed a motion-detector sprinkler which sprays across the lawn...
I have 5 hens and 2 cats. I have a chicken coop with one nest box and a cat duplex. Two of the hens just recently started laying while the other 3 have been laying for 9 months now.
The two new to laying have started nesting and laying in the cats' duplex. At night, they even try to roost...
Well, our buff orp Saffron has been sitting on 20 eggs for almost 5 weeks and amazingly, today a baby chick was born! Thanks for the advice on the eggs. I'm glad we just let her sit for as long as she felt was right.

I have 4 free range 5 month old hens - EE, NHR, 2 Buff Orpingtons. The lead Buff was always hen #1 when I had a rooster and they were mating even though she wasn't even laying yet. Because the rooster was attacking my 4 yo, we sent him away on July 4th. Then the next day, my lead Buff started...
Oh, and my hens do not seem a bit sad that the rooster is gone. They went to bed tonight without any fighting or re-sorting of the pecking order. Hen number one is still hen number one. Sparkles is still at the bottom.
They are a little bit scattered though. I guess he must have kept them...
"Im sorry but if one of my roos went after my kids....it would take me all of about 2 seconds to fix the problem and not have that rooster no more....he would be in the oven without even thinking about it."
I agree. He attacked my daughter yesterday and we were ready to eat him. My older...
We just took our beautiful New Hampshire Red rooster back today to the local feed store where we got him 4 1/2 months ago. He attacked my 4 year old, flying up at her face, scratching with his legs and bit her on the wrist. He drew blood and he only backed down after held him on the ground with...
Well, I took him back to Critter Country in Clovis where I got him and they took him back. The owners have 40 acres and the chickens have a pen 40x50 ft. I am very relieved. They have been really helpful and great throughout our first chicken experience so I wanted to post it to the chicken...
I have a 4 1/2 month old New Hampshire Red Rooster who we have raised since he was ten days old purchased from our local feed store. Although we had not intended to have a rooster, we have enjoyed his company thoroughly and were hoping to have baby chicks. Unfortunately, he has started attacking...
Thanks everyone for your help with this.
I'm getting a general theme of mutual respect between us and the chickens. So far I think we have done OK with this. I think the ban on chicken-chasing will continue. I can see how I might hold a grudge if I were a rooster.
So far our rooster has not...
Thanks so much for another point of view. So maybe I should continue the ban on chicken-chasing. The girls also hand feed and water the chickens all the time. My youngest will dig in the dirt for the chickens. They are so funny crowding around her feet when she has a shovel in her hand. So maybe...
Well, this is good to know.
My kids chase all the chickens including the rooster. They have never run away from any of them, only towards them. I had to stop them last month because they accidentally stepped on the rooster's foot and I had to splint it. He is completely recovered now, but I was...
My rooster is 4 months old. Although we did not intend to have a rooster, we have really enjoyed having him. He is just now starting to bite the hens on the necks and try to stand on them. We have 4 hens. The hens don't seem to be seriously injured. No bleeding, just some loose feathers. They...

We have just six chicks about seven weeks old now. We live in the middle of town with just under an acre.
