I have two barred rocks and two Rhode Island reds. They're all new to laying eggs (and I'm new to the chicken scene). I've noticed for the past 3-4 days, one of the eggs has a dark spot on its tip. Does anyone know what the spots mean? Here are two different pictures, two of yesterday's egg...
We got the framing in, and the walls of the interior of the coop in, and most of the hardware cloth up today. Next up is to finish the hardware cloth, finish the interior walls of the coop, and then put the siding (exterior) on.
Thank you! The upper side of our back yard was unused for years. Getting up there was hard, almost impossible, so it was hard to maintain. So we built some stairs. The chicken coop and planter boxes (that you can't see because they're behind the camera) are up there now.
We got the framing...
Here are more pictures of our little flock from today.
This is one of our dogs, Abby. If you look closely, you can see Bert, the little cockerel, perked up high. I think he is already learning to protect his hens.
This is the foundation I'm building for the backyard coop/run. I am...
This is their first day at home. I made their brooder out of a cardboard box, a small dog food dish, and a waterer from the feed store. Oh, and I also have a light to keep them warm, and I put a baby gate on top to keep our dogs and cat from getting into their space.
These pictures were...
Of all the coops my husband has looked at, he is always comes back to this one. He really likes the design and is going to base our backyard coop off of it.
That is great news and excellent information about breeding the roo.
My only chicken-rearing friend here in town has a few barred rocks. I've always thought they were beautiful and secretly wished I'd have brought home a couple from the feed store, too. (I'm giving her my rooster, actually.)...
I bought five pullets from the feed store, my receipt confirms three are Rhode Island Reds and two are Black Australorps. Being new to chickens, I am hoping someone can help me with this. They are five weeks old now and I'm noticing two very strange things:
1. The Black Australorps do not...
Thank you for welcoming me. :) Yes, that is him, on the right. He is bigger than the other two RIR's.
Our city does not allow roosters. However, one of my friends has very generously agreed to take Big Bert in, as she has about 8 hens of her own and is looking for a rooster to protect her...
Hi everyone. My husband and I (and two hardly-ever-home teenaged kids) are starting a new adventure this year. Once the fruits of my research confirmed that our city allowed chickens, off to the feed store we went and five chicks came home with us. We got three Rhode Island Reds and two Black...
Okay, thank you all! We will keep you posted on how it goes.
JRey, I'll post more pics of him up here so you and everyone else can watch his growth until he's ready to move to your homestead. I'm so glad you're taking him in, my friend. =)
Hiya JRey! Here is the little stud, at 4 weeks. To all on the forum, we're all ok with him getting eaten, but the smitty's just can't be "the" family that butchers/eats him, seeing how we've named, or rather misnamed, him. He still needs to feather out and as J said, he is about 4 weeks...
