I'm going through roughly the same thing. I however have 3 littles and 5 in my established flock. I tried putting them together a few weeks ago but learned a very valuable lesson. Since then, I bought a dog cage put it in my run with a waterer, feeder, and a dowl for them to pearch on. They've...
Thanks! I never even thought they might try and starve the young ones. I was thinking of trying to put them in with the flock now but they're only 6 weeks and still so small so I don't think they'll survive if I tried now. I was thinking they'd be at a better advantage around 12 weeks, but it's...
I have 5 hens in my coop. I am trying to figure out what age my 3 baby chicks can be integrated into the flock. They're fully feathered but much too small to take the pecking order as of right now. They can stand the weather right now though. My question is at what age do you think they're big...
I have a 23 week old buff Orpington that gets extremely loud in the morning lately. She wasn't always so loud and chatty in the morning. She has not started laying eggs yet either. I'm wondering if she's getting so chatty because she's about to start laying or if this behavior is because of...
Thank you so much! I just wrote them a lengthy letter and plan on going to the hearing this Thursday. I hope they over turn their laws. I'm tired of being a law breaker
My county is setting up a zoning ordinance change and they are having hearings to hear from people why or why not our county should allow hens. I want to speak at one of the hearings but I'm not too well versed on chickens so I'd like some input from others on good arguments on why they should...
I've done it and it still works. I made the mistake of introducing a hen too soon during the day and she got attacked. So I waited a few days and snuck her in at night and she integrated right into my flock with no problems. :)
After they've all gone to bed and its nice and dark I put my new members in with the flock in the coop. They don't seem to really take notice of the new members since they're busy trying to sleep. I then wake up extra early the next morning to check on them to see if they're integrating okay...
I have no idea what type of chicken this is. It came with my Easter eggers but it looks nothing like my others. I'm also thinking it might be a rooster. It's about 8 weeks old. It's not crowing but it is fighting with my Easter egger rooster
When you go to make the new introductions I've found it helpful after you let them see each other for a while to introduce them at night time with a lot of birds. Of course you need to rise early that day to make sure things are going well come morning time. I've had a lot of success that way...
I think you may be right. I'm thinking I don't have enough ventilation in my coop. I'm thinking of adding another window to get a cross ventilation going because it does feel rather hot in there even though it wasn't as hot outside the coop today. I tried the fan/ waterbottle trick today and all...
You are correct on your guess. The darker is a roo and lighter a pullet. I don't think you need to add more hens unless it shows through their dynamic that more would be beneficial.
Well it's pretty cool at night but it might be a tad hot in the coop so I'll try your advice on the water bottles. We do have quite a few predator issues around here so I'm pretty adamant about them going in the coop. Just the other day I saw a raccoon not too far from my house which was odd...
So I'm pretty new at this and my entire flock of 10 chickens are all still pretty young. They range in age between 6 weeks to 14 weeks. Once they were fully feathered I put them outside in the coop which has been going pretty well. I have roosts inside the coop that are the proper distance off...
