Thanks! I hadn't even thought about the extension service! I'll give them a call. I plan on keeping the chicks. I've had chickens for a couple years now, but never hatched my own. Although, I'm sure a couple of the kids' parents wouldn't mind sending the chicks home. I live in a mostly rural...
I'd really like to get an incubator and hatch eggs with my students. I've never hatched eggs before, so I really don't know where to begin. What type of incubator and brooding system should I get? What about environmental factors? Temperature, vibrations, NOISE, etc? These are middle school...
First eggs yesterday! 8/23/14. They're 22 weeks and a RIR was sitting on them but I think the brown leghorns might have actually laid them. We found a third egg when we checked on them before bedtime! Wow! 3 on the first day! @c9flybyu
Good to know! I've given my girls lettuce, mealworms, cracked corn, live crickets from the bait shop, cooked rice, apples, and even a blueberry pound cake that my husband and I couldn't eat anymore leftovers from! Lol. Their favorite was the blueberry pound cake! Haha. I've got some leftover...
We had a 2 1/2-3ft rattler the other day and a 5 ft chicken snake yesterday. The dogs cornered them both times and we were able to kill them but I'm terrified of snakes. I'm willing to try anything to prevent them from even coming around as long as it's safe for my pets.
We are having a problem with snakes around our property but haven't seen any in the coop/run. I've been told to put lime (Lyme?) out to deter the snakes. Before I do, is it safe to put it near the chickens?
Just curious... I have 3 brown leghorns in my flock along with RIR's and wyandottes. It seems they are very shy/skittish in comparison to my other girls. The RIR's and Wyandottes come running to me and can't wait to be picked up and petted. The BL's, not on your life! Is this normal for the...
Thanks. My husband is building it now and should be finished this weekend. He wanted something small and I insisted he nearly double the size of his original plans. I don't know the actual specs, but I think it should work for what we have. That is, unless some more chickens just happen to find...
Hello backyard chicken world! I'm new to this whole chicken thing! My husband and I just started our flock. We have 6 Rhode Island reds, 3 wyandottes, and 3 brown leghorns. We're a month in, and I'm already in love!
We live in South Mississippi on a little over 4 acres out in the country. It's...
