    Chickens not laying...

The three hens that have started laying are 28 weeks old. I have 2 Barnevelder hens that are 28 weeks that have not started laying, and another five hens that are 22 weeks old. I believe the first two hens started laying around 16 or 17 weeks old.

    Chickens not laying...

They do free range in our back yard, so we've found eggs in strange places, but the barred rock has always laid in the egg box. She was starting to get a bit broody over the last week before she stopped laying, so maybe that is part of her issue...

    Chickens not laying...

I have 13 chickens: 1 full-size rooster, 2 bantam roosters, 9 full-size hens and 1 bantam hen. Six of them are about 5 weeks older than the other seven. We ferment their organic feed, and add DE to both their bedding and sometimes to their food. We also feed them lentil sprouts we grow and wild...

    Fermented Feeds

I started feeding my chickens fermented feed about two weeks ago... Started with mason jars, but for 13 chickens, I was refilling constantly. A few days ago, I switched to a bucket, and everything is going much better! They mob me as I come out the door :) We liken it to chicken crack... except...

    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Thank you! The chicken journey started out for eggs, but they've become so special just on their own that I hadn't really even thought about the eggs too much recently... Now that they have started laying there's a whole new WOW

    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

I had never even heard of the "egg song", so I was terrified when I started hearing it this morning. I thought somebody was in trouble! I went running to the coop and opened the door. Although the song had stopped before I got there, Petra (Barred Rock, 19wo) still made a short, similar noise...

    Frizzle Welsummer??

I have a pullet that was purchased as a Welsummer and is currently 7wks old. She is chipmunk patterned and very long and leggy compared to the chicks of other breeds in her group (Brahma, Brabanter, D'Uccle, D'Anvers). She holds her head very high. I don't know if these are Welsummer traits. I'm...

My Sagitta seems to have poor vision

You are very welcome :) As a side note, we gave our older chicks steamed asparagus yesterday and they LOVED it :)

    Newly chick-aggressive baby rooster...

We have 7 chicks that are 6wks old, equally mixed between Bantam (3) and Full-Size (4). Our Light Brahma chick is much larger than the others and has been the accepted leader of the group. Yesterday, I noticed the D'Uccle Bantam rooster chick pecking at the wing of one chick to take it's spot on...

My Sagitta seems to have poor vision

I have no idea... I haven't tried feeding them to our younger chicks yet. With chick grit, they are probably fine :)

My Sagitta seems to have poor vision

I have an EE who is 11 wks who is having the same problem with raisins... but she seems to be the top of the pecking order. She started out quiet and popped out as a front runner around 7wks of age. Our Barred Rock is ferocious and awesome at getting the raisins, but that means that Qisma...

I'm trying to get this picture, but these are the best I can do so far... I cannot get my camera to cooperate!

    Curling Wing Feathers - Welsummer

Quote: The farm sells chicks bought from Ideal Poultry. It looked like a Welsummer chick as far as my newbie eyes could tell, and they didn't have any frizzles for sale at that time. I don't know if it is a frizzle... Some of the feathers seem to be growing in upside down rather than curving.

    The Welsummer Site

I have a chick that I purchased as a Welsummer, but her feathers are growing in differently than my other chicks. First they seemed to curl, but I was cuddling with her tonight and it seems like some of them are growing in upside-down?? I don't have a pic yet, but does anyone have a frizzle...

Okay... I'm here because my 3wk old Welsummer chick has some bonkers feathers The come out and away from her body, and on another forum, somebody suggested she may be a frizzle! I don't have a pic, but she does look like the chicks in pics I have found. Tonight, though, I noticed it looked like...
