So I came home this afternoon, and was setting the groceries in the kitchen when I heard the first notes of what sounded like the egg song come floating in through the door. I stepped onto the back deck and shortly the girls cut loose! I ran and grabbed my camera to video them.
They're about 20 weeks old and I'm just impatient for that first egg, whenever it arrives! With all this fuss, I thought for sure someone had laid an egg! Alas, the nest boxes are empty except for the "training eggs". Do you suppose they are beginning to gear up for some egg laying? Maybe practicing their song?
And boy, with all six singing, it got loud!![]()

Boy it sure sounded like the 'egg song' to me, too! I loved watching your video as I, too, have Black Australorps...4 young ladies that in the next few weeks should be doing their thing...yay! You have a lovely flock, but then I'm partial to BA's!!![]()
Did you look to see if one of them laid an egg on the floor of the coop or in the run??
I had never even heard of the "egg song", so I was terrified when I started hearing it this morning. I thought somebody was in trouble! I went running to the coop and opened the door. Although the song had stopped before I got there, Petra (Barred Rock, 19wo) still made a short, similar noise coming out the door. Qizmoto (Americauna, 19wo), the rooster, chased her around the yard and into the finished compost bin, and I checked the coop once I realized she was okay. This afternoon, our little girls came running in, jumping up and down that there was an egg! It looks to be from Aang (Americauna, 19wo)... After a search of the yard, I found an egg in the compost bin, so I think Petra layed during or after that crazy chase! These are our first eggs ever, and it's so exciting!
