Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

for all your waiting to pay off soon. I could watch Chicken TV all day/every day - my husband tracked me down in the coop over the weekend and was like, "What are you doing - you've been out here for hours" - he has no appreciation for the wonders of chicken-tainment.
Haha! When we first got our chicks and after we had them for about 4-5 days, I made a remark to my husband that our dogs hadn't left the view of the brooder since they got there. My husbands response was "Neither have you!" He was right. :)

Thank you! The chicken journey started out for eggs, but they've become so special just on their own that I hadn't really even thought about the eggs too much recently... Now that they have started laying there's a whole new WOW

I had never even heard of the "egg song", so I was terrified when I started hearing it this morning. I thought somebody was in trouble! I went running to the coop and opened the door. Although the song had stopped before I got there, Petra (Barred Rock, 19wo) still made a short, similar noise coming out the door. Qizmoto (Americauna, 19wo), the rooster, chased her around the yard and into the finished compost bin, and I checked the coop once I realized she was okay. This afternoon, our little girls came running in, jumping up and down that there was an egg! It looks to be from Aang (Americauna, 19wo)... After a search of the yard, I found an egg in the compost bin, so I think Petra layed during or after that crazy chase! These are our first eggs ever, and it's so exciting!

Congratulations!!!!

Being a stay at home mom with only 3 hens and watching " chicken tv " pretty much every morning, it's pretty easy to know what each bird is doing. Call me crazy but it seems to me that the egg song for my ladies is more a " hey get out of here I need privacy!". Seriously, the girls egg laying is now spaced about 2 hrs apart for each hen and eggs are being laid in complete silence. It's only when one of the other girls actually enters the coop that they get going! Silly birds!

my birds seem to use the egg song as a distress signal.

My girls will also use the egg song to find each other if someone wonders out of sight. I still only have 1 who actually sings it and she starts it as she walks up the ramp to the coop. The others sing it for her after she lays. Out of 6 only 1 is laying, they all squat when approached but haven't started laying. My poor Bertha is on day 14 with no break, is that normal?

Yes completely normal! The condition of the eggs will tell you if she's getting enough nutrition to keep laying. Nice hard shells good color and shape. The others will start when ready. For most breeds it is anywhere between 18 and 24 weeks! With my ladies, egret started right about 18 weeks and the other two started on the same day about 3 weeks later... All sisters too so go figure! Oh btw I've read that the alarm call and the egg song are the same just a different intensity.
