Actually, I didn't update, because I didn't get much response, but a few days after I posted this, she started supporting her own weight and walking more, and as of a few days ago, she is back in the coop with the other chickens! I was worried that the mama hen wouldn't accept her back after 2...
Thanks - it's definitely not pasty butt. She is older and her vent is clean. And she is pooping normally. I thought it might be a vitamin deficiency, but I've been treating her for a week with no change.
This is my first time posting this type of thread, so I will just answer the questions.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
This is a 4 week old black australorp pullet. She is tinier than the other chicks hatched at the...
My user name is because I used to work in the education department of a zoo, and now my whole life is a zoo - with 4 active kids, a couple pets, and now chickens.
My avatar is my cat and chickens staring each other down through the front door.
OK, I have to share my excitement, as well as a funny picture. First, we finally had our first egg, and we ended up with two first eggs on the same day! One of my barred rocks laid her first on Monday, and not to be outdone, around 4 in the afternoon, a black australorp laid her first egg as...
Welcome to the thread! :) As of right now, I'm not looking for roosters, but maybe someone will be interested.
I realized today that I am pretty sure at least one of my hens is not a pure barred rock, and one may not be a pure black australorp. One of the barred rocks has a lot of extra white...
You won't believe this, but while I was on vacation, I fed my 8 month old a scrambled egg, and it turns out she is severely allergic! An ambulance ride and a shot of benedryl later, she is doing well, but we have strict orders to avoid feeding her anything with egg in it, and ALSO for me to...
If it makes you feel any better, my hens honk too, especially my EEs, but also my black australorps, and they are about the same age. It's quite a funny sound, and one I wasn't expecting!
Can I share some pics of my little flock?
One of their favorite perches - an old bench thing by our shed:
Unichickie (my EE) suspiciously peeking around a tree at me, while the barred rock (Anna?) lounges next to the shed:
The whole flock (2 barred rock, 2 black australorp, 2 EE)...
That is really helpful - thank you! I don't know that I will have any roos - we live in a rural area, but have a couple of semi-close, very nice neighbors who would never complain, but might silently dislike it - but that is good to know about the feathered feet. My son spilled the chickens'...
Exciting! I am hoping to maybe get a couple of marans next year. My husband made me promise to only get 6 this year, but I'd like to add a few each year, especially since we have such a large coop. I'll be getting light brown and blue eggs most likely with what I currently have (if they EVER...
I am no expert, as I have only just started keeping chickens, but I have 2 13-week-old black australorp pullets who don't have wattles like that, so I am guessing roo.
