They are awesome! So much fun and practical too! I can spot which hen is which when they are having a squabble or acting "off".

Love these chicken leg band charms. Super easy to put on. My kids banded all the hens by themselves. In fact, they keep switching out charms on different birds. I can tell which hen is picking the other one despite all the hens being the same breed/color. These band charms are really cute and...

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Well we only had 2 out of 15 for our first broody hen attempt. I think it was just too blasted hot and she was such a dedicated first timer she over cooked them. The two eggs that hatched were the two that were at the very front edge of the nest so I think they remained the coolest. We cracked...

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I can't believe it! Our first time broody has hatched 2 eggs. Technically it is day 20 as I didn't give her the eggs to sit on until the late afternoon on the 1st. So far two chocolate orpington chicks have hatched.

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Trying to be optimistic on day 20 but feeling a little leery. Had one egg shell kicked out of the nest box last night. I nearly lost my mind with excitement until I got close enough to smell. So now we are down to 10 from the original 15 that she is still sitting on. I don't know if anything...

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Decided to move our girl to a more secure ground level location. She immediately sat on her eggs and acted relaxed and content. I gave her a bit of food today and water. I haven't seen her off the nest except when I took her off to move the eggs. I know mother nature knows best and that I may...

First time raising a clutch using a broody hen!

One week down ... two to go! I haven't seen her off the nest. I bring her water because it has been so hot here. This morning I gave her the tops of two strawberries. If she's hungry I'm sure she'll go eat!

Same thing here, we have other ladies in and out of the coop. But we never find eggs anywhere but in the nest boxes.

First time raising a clutch using a broody hen!

Same thing happened to us. We found one broken and one just completely disappeared. Think mama might have eaten it. No shell, nothing left. Very odd. Lucky 13 on the nest now. Our Broody mama is never off the nest!

I offered her a drink before I set it in the corner and she took a few gulps.

First time raising a clutch using a broody hen!

So far so good. I have such a dedicated broody girl. It's be very hot here and although I said I'd just let mother Nature take its course I did start putting a tiny condiment container of water to her each day. Her comb is so droopy and pale that I thought it was best to at least keep her...

First time raising a clutch using a broody hen!

There are a lot of threads on this section that had good advice. I read through a lot of them. I'm going with a very hands off approach and let nature take its course. Once the chicks hatch I'll probably have to section her off until she takes the lowere nest box. She was not interested in...
