Review by '' on item 'Welsummer'

I had two welsummers I have just rehomed to a farm. I live on a third of an acre and am allowed 6 hens in my backyard. The two welsummers I had were always complaining and squawking. Compared to my other breeds - barred rock, cochin, buff brahma, and easter egger, they were by far the loudest...

SIlver Laced Wyandotte 10 Weeks Old - Rooster or Pullet?

Thank you everyone for your opinions. My Pet Chicken's policy is that you have to reach out to them from 10-17 weeks of age if you feel you got the wrong gender, so I have reached out to them. Really appreciate your feedback!

SIlver Laced Wyandotte 10 Weeks Old - Rooster or Pullet?

Purchased from My Pet Chicken as a day old pullet. Looks like a rooster to me, but I am fairly new to chickens and have no other wyandottes to compare him to (that is a Welsummer pullet with him in the background). Your thoughts?

Getting My First Chickens Ever on the 23rd

I posted it on eBay and only got half the cost of it back (we actually never took it out of the box, which helped), but better than nothing! It also took us longer to build the permanent run than we thought it would, so I grabbed a "Free" chicken coop/run from Craiglist that ended up costing me...

Getting My First Chickens Ever on the 23rd

Thank you for the welcome and the well wishes! I don't remember where I learned about easter eggers... it all started when I was at Farm & Fleet and saw the chicks AND they also had one of those prefab tiny coops for $200. I thought, hey, that is easy enough, and started doing a bunch of...

Getting My First Chickens Ever on the 23rd

So, I didn't end up picking out girls so well. The silver laced and buff cochins I selected turned out to be boys. The silver laced was obvious from fairly early on, but the buff was a late bloomer - he did not stand like a rooster, let the other rooster be the boss, filled out his comb slower...

My first babies are here!!! White cochins

I got 3 cochins, 2 easter eggers, and a barred rock. The cochins were a silver laced, a buff, and a splash. The silver laced and buff turned out to be roosters, so we culled them (I did try to find them a new home first, but no one was interested). The easter eggers I got looked very...

Comment by 'thinks2much2' in item 'Easter Eggers'

Thank you everyone for the input! I wish sending Star over to visit would train my chickens! :) I need to get hatching EE eggs from someone with a chicken like Star next time, I think. Like fiddlechicken said, I think I just have to accept the fact that some of my chickens will be pets and...

Review by '' on item 'Easter Eggers'

First time chicken owner here, where I am allowed 6 hens and no roosters by local ordinance. For the most part, I wanted to have each one a different breed and/or color, and I wanted the friendliest layers. I got 3 cochins in different colors, 2 easter eggers (in what I thought would be...

    Rubbermaid Storage Shed as Coop

Hi- I am also considering purchasing a resin shed to make into a coop, but would need to cut a window for light and ventilation. Can anyone verify if this works out okay with the resin?

What material to weatherproof a coop?

I live in Northern Illinois and don't have any answers for you, but am interested to hear what people recommend for you, as I will also face the same issue. We have not started building our coop yet, but plan to this weekend.

So sorry to hear of your loss. How devastating! I am not using an extension cord and won't now.

    Post your Chick Pictures Here!!!

Just finalized my first ever flock today... I am only allowed 6 hens in my area. I have 2 EE pullets, 1 barred rock pullet, and 3 cochins that were straight run. Hoping they are girls! These are the cochins - a buff, a splash, and a silver laced. Here are the other 3 - the barred rock on...

    brooder lights

I have my chicks set up in a 54 gallon rubbermaid tub inside the spare bedroom. I started with the 250 watt red bulb in a dry run before getting my chicks, and it was way too hot. It had to be 5 feet above the tub to read 95 degrees at chick height. It heated the whole room to 90 degrees, I...

My first babies are here!!! White cochins

Picked up my 3 cochin chicks today. The buff seems rather calm and quiet, the splash is middle of the road, and the silver laced (on the right) is quite confident and (maybe overly) interested in food.

Getting My First Chickens Ever on the 23rd

So, here are my 3 cochin chicks I got this morning - a buff, a splash, and a silver laced. I decided not to get a blue. I am planning to get 2 easter eggers in the shipment on Friday.

My first babies are here!!! White cochins

I love the partridges and mille fleurs too! But they are not getting those colors at my feed store. I live in a residential area where I can only have 6 chickens and they have to be hens once over 6 months old, so I am really hoping I am lucky enough to pick out girls. I am going back on...
