I am also starting my chickens on a higher protein. My free ranging bird's weight seems good. But the ones that arent allowed to free range every day are definitely skinnier.
Im switcing from a 16% lay crumble, with protein coming solely from soy bean; to a 21% Game bird/Turkey delevoper with...
Has anyone stuck a thermometer under their broody hen?
I just stuck 2 different ones under them (there are 4 broody's right now), and their temperature ranged from 101 to 102!
They do better than I at hatching eggs..
Just curious if any else has done this and found the same thing.
Wanted to add for the CA folks, if you live close enough to one of these labs, you may take a live chicken there. It would be humanely euthanized prior to running tests. What they explained is that they can run a broader spectrum of tests this way and have a much clearer picture of what is...
Outpost JWB Thank you for the follow up, Im glad your chicken is doing great! I just hatched one like this. One eye is only slightly smaller than normal, but can see just fine out of it. The other eye is only about 5% open, and not sure if it can see out of this eye. Its attiude is great, very...
I am having the SAME problem!!!
Except I already have the egg o meter, and it fluctuates quickly like it is reading the air temperature, and is reading 98 degrees, which I know by the timing of my first hatch (early) it should be somewhere close to 100.
I just got the Brisnea spot check, and...
Well, my Brisnea spot check thermometer arrived.... I am angry....
Why is it so hard to get a thermometer that WORKS!
According to the Brisnea thermometer, my incubator is running way to low to create life in it... like I have been.
I stuck it under my tounge, and according to that thermometer...
Thanks for your input!
Yeah, I have the other two in a different incubator, so the drops in humidity dont affect them.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out, Ive never had this problem before, and didnt even think it would make it this far..
Well, Ambient weather does pretty good on reporting relative humidity, once you calibrate it (using salt and water), and then just add or subract whatever number you need based on your Calibration results.
Ambient weather is TERRIBLE at accurate tempurates.
Egg o Meter is useless for...
Does anyone have experience with hatching shipped eggs?
I have 3 turkey eggs going into lock down today. All 3 had detached air cells, that re attached on Day 12. 1 of those retained fluid in the air cell, the other 2 have good air cells (odd shaped, but dry inside).
The one that retained...
What is the percentage of weightloss a chicken egg should have during incubation??
I have read 10%, 12%, 13%, and 14% over the 21 day period...
I am trying to set up my graph to determine if my humidity is accurate, and need to know which percentage to set it up on!
Also, would it be the...
I am taking the incubating plunge!! I've read A LOT about incubators!! I have made that decision!
Next up: The Thermometer/Hygrometer....
What I want:
Temp
Humidity
Wireless
Accurate!
Multiple sensors 3, minimum 2 (Incubator, hatcher, brooder)
Alarm when temp or humidity is out of range...
Congrats on your chicks!!
Can you please post how you did your staggered hatches with one incubator, and let us know the temps and humidity along the way, as well as how far apart the chicks hatched, and the hatch rates of each set of eggs? Im curious if the increased humidity affected any of...
