Yes, we used expanded metal on the floor for just that reason, but we also have panels that we can lay down on the floor, when we need to keep out the cold, works great so far!
Thank you! and LOL Mountianchick, that's an awesome idea! I love the chickendance music!! It is movable and towable, we plan to move it around our property as needed, to spread the chicken love (aka poo)
Here is the finished coop, made on an old tralier, I have some more pics somewhere, of the construction and such, when I find them, I will update it The little doors open up into the nest boxes to retrieve the eggs easily
Yes, starting from early on was the key in my doggy/chick relationship, from day one, we let them sniff them when the dog was calm and sitting or laying down. but only my one dog took it upon herself to stay with them the whole time as their protector, pretty cute! She's no long an Aussie...
Yes, I was so impressed with my dog, Aussie, she really loved being by them, she slept next to the brooder the first few nights we had them. When the other dogs came out to visit, she was very protective, and did not like them getting to close to her flock! LOL
They are Hubbard ISA browns...
It was finally sunny and nice outside today, so they got to play outside, they were not sure what to make of it all at first, but quickly caught on that it was fun and new, and they even caught a few bugs! Yay, let the chicken pest control begin! Hopefully their new coop will be done soon and...
They will need some grit to digest any bugs they do eat. We got some chick grit at the farm supply store, which is pink, crushed granite, I believe, I like to offer it free choice in the brooder and outside. Not sure about sandbox sand.
What do you mean by dust? the little baby feathers? I am just wondering what I have in store for me! I have noticed more little chick fluff flying lately. I try to vacuum around the brooder often, the chicks dont seem to mind
I have been a member for a few weeks, but have not officially introduced myself I love this website, it has been such a wonderful resource and so many wonderful folks here that are willing to help!
I was born and raised in Montana, and tho I have lived other places, I am honored to call...
Very Cute! You are just lucky and/or a very good chick Mom! I think handling them daily is key, mine took a week or so to get used to us. I also think certain chicken breeds are more calm than other, what kind are yours?
If you haven't tried it already, make some mash for your babies! Just mix the chick starter in a small bowl of water and viola! Mine just love it and will eat it right off my finger tips! I put the bowl in the brooder and they devour it and then jockey for position to sleep in the bowl! silly...
I have been trying to think of names for my girls too! So far I have come up with Henrietta, Ms. Cluckers, Queenie (for the top hen), Frenchie, Evie, Chicklette, and I am still thinking.....
We are making our chicken coop on an old 4'x8' trailer, we were thinking that if we have a grated floor, the poop will just fall through and we can keep moving the coop to fertilize our pasture. Has anyone done this successfully? We plan to build flaps to go around the bottom of the house to...
Hi Jen! Thanks for the info! It does not look sore or scabbed at all, and her other underwing is fuzzy. I have not noticed this in the other girls at all. It seems she may have gone to far preening (I think that's what it's called) But I guess it all gets replaced eventually! I will keep...
I noticed today that one of my week old chick has a bald spot, almost looks like small bump at her wing joint, I am not sure if she's been picking at it, or the other? I have not seen any others doing it and the way it is under her wing, makes me think she did it to herself. She's using the...
