based on their advice you should provide 125cm2 of floor space per adult bird if you are putting them on wire.
I couple of years ago when i was raising quails, 2 of the females did go broody and they hatched 2 chicks each. It is possible for them to become broody but it is very rare.
I find that i typically processing my quails at 8-10 weeks. Not because they have reached their preimum weight, but i find that i can't afford to feed them for an extra 2 weeks!!!!

I have put 2 near my beeder cage. This is a photo of my breeder setup
Although it is said that you should only provide 14 hours of light, the solar lights...
The way i have been providing light to my quails is by using solar garden lights. I put them adjacent to the breeding pens and they provide enough light to keep the quails laying all winter... and they cost nothing to run or maintain and they turn on automatically when the light levels are low.
I am looking at processing 10 quails that i have in a pen this weekend, but today i found an egg in the pen. I would like to separate the egg leayer from the rest and add her to my breeding flock but i cant figure out which one it is. Besides separating each feamale and looking at who lays the...
i had an 2 quail eggs crack on day 14. One had a mild crack but the egg shell was indented in a bit. I left the egg alone and the chick hatched unassisted on day 18 and the chick was fine. The other egg was pretty smashed up. Even though i left it for the full incubation period the chick had...
mate i dont know what is wrong with your chicks but that is definately not normal. Understandable that most of them have died... sorry to see that happen.
A general question about the R-Com 20. Are you finding that you have to recalibrate it every time you begin reusing the incubator? I find that i when i set a new batch of eggs that the system needs to be calibrated again. I have a thermometer the incubator all the time so i use it to constantly...
Using scissors and you run the risk of them being blunt and then having to hack at the bird until it gets cut off. The easiest method is to hold the bird against a chopping board with one hand, and with a sharp knife, run it over the neck with one quick motion. Cuts the head off instantly and...
Im wondering if you have been feeding the chicks medicated feed. What happended to your birds sounds like coccidiosis. The older birds wouldnt have died because they would have built up immunity to it but the chicks wouldnt have. It happended to me when i lost 7 2 week old chicks (half the...
Im struggling to get the humidity up at the moment. Its the middle of winter and i can only get 50% humidity here. I will leave them till tomorrow and hopefully they will hatch.
Im currently on day 17 of incubation and this morning i have a number of eggs that are showing cracks in the shell. It is about 2pm and the eggs dont seem to be cracking any further. I haven't had any chicks hatch yet but i was wondering is it normal for quail eggs to take this long to hatch or...
Those eggs went like that because they have been in the incubator for at least 17 days at the incubation temperature and humidity. The egg does look like that after a while. It just means that your eggs were not fertile to begin with.
I change between chicken starter and turkey starter for my quails all the time and something like that has never happended to me. Maybe it is something else that is causing this behaviour...
i hatched some quails on tusday and one of the chicks had curled up feet like you described Calgal. I had him in the brooder for 2 days and this morning i noticed that its feet had straightened out by itself. This can rectify itself.
Methylated spirits is sort of a bacterial disenfectant not sure if it is enough though to properly sanitise the incubator.
