    ISA-Brown page. :)))))))

TheChips- have you checked their vent area for mites? I recently found that my flock has an infestation :/ it may show itself as a dirty butt, but upon closer inspection, you may see some little squirmy/crawly things. Two of my hens started acting the same as yours and stopped laying, so I...

Black sex link thread!!! Pics and info!

While my BSLs are talkative, they lay almost every day, are great foragers, and very cold hardy(in MN it's a must)! Their chatter is a plus because it brightens the mood when I go into the coop :)

    Broody Breaking in Winter?

I have my first broody girl, Layah the Leghorn(unlikely huh?), and need to break her as it is too cold for her to hatch us some chicks! I have tried kicking her off the nest and it has not worked. I read about the wire bottom cage method, but I don't have anything that would work for that. I do...

I've searched! Nothing to be found... Could she just be a (very) late bloomer?

    ISA-Brown page. :)))))))

One of my ISA's, Penny, is 29 weeks old and still hasn't laid. Her comb turned red first and we were sure she was going to start laying when she was 17 wks. She was also the first of our girls to squat for us. We have a light in the the coop so they are getting 12-14 hours of light a day and all...

Why breed would you recommend for a "newbie"?

I haven't quite decided, but I'm thinking about bantam orpingtons!

Why breed would you recommend for a "newbie"?

Karen, thank you so much for this information! For the record, I am not planning on buying hatchery stock. I know of a breeder near me that I might go to, but came here first to see what other expirienced breeders and showers have to offer!

Why breed would you recommend for a "newbie"?

Thanks! I have two hatchery stock Wyandottes and they are nice but more touchy, I think it's because they are the lowest in the pecking order in my flock. I've heard of brahmas and will do some more research!

Why breed would you recommend for a "newbie"?

I have developed quite an interest in chickens and can see myself continuing this as I get older, so I would like to start raising show/breeder chickens. I have 3 more in 4H and would like to get serious about showing before I can't be a 4h show person anymore! I'm wondering what breed all you...

    Cochin Thread!!!

Hey there! I just brought home a large fowl Black Cochin. A friend of mine breeds these for 4H and didn't need five cockerels, so Louis came home with me! He comes from show stock, but had a few disqualifications so they wouldn't be breeding him. They didn't want to see such a nice bird be...

Black sex link thread!!! Pics and info!

So Jolene has started laying! She first laid a soft shell egg while on the roost(we think) two days ago and laid her 1st good egg today! It's a light pink brown egg. Now getting 5 eggs a day!! Only 6 more chickens to start laying!

Black sex link thread!!! Pics and info!

So it turns out it was not a BSL who laid it.. It was the same hen who laid the dark brown egg and some discoloration happens when they are just starting to lay:/

The two I mentioned, two gold laced Wyandottes, and California whites(white eggs) the Wyandottes aren't ready to lay yet though, according to observation and research. I just want to make sure that it's a BSL and not an ISA Brown!

The dark egg I know was laid by one of my ISA browns, could the lighter one be laid by one if my BSLs?

Welcome to BYC! This is my first year raising guineas (for tick and garden bug control) and I kept them in the coop with my chickens so they know where home is. We let them out into the run in the morning and they fly over the fence and free range during the day, then fly back over and go into...

Hey Chicken Lovers - I'm new here and new to keeping chickens

Welcome to BYC! I'm not sure what's available in Ireland, but my ISA browns are my sweetest! I've also heard that buff orpingtons are quite nice and good with kids!
