    Pecking and protein

i am dealing with the cannabilism/feather eating problem here too...I have a RIR who has decided that everybody's bumm is her treat. Two of my other chickens were pecked so badly the top layer of their backside split open. they are all terrified of Lucy now, she just seems to chase them around...

thought was prolapse, now looks like a wound!

no, no pic yet...when I took her back out (she is in the travel kennel inside the coop, not happy about THAT) i noted one of my other birds also had a bloody butt...though no "open wound" like the EE's. and one of the banty has some feathers missing on her back...maybe moulting...so maybe they...

thought was prolapse, now looks like a wound!

kay, chicken with blood from bottom, large, round protrusion, thought was prolapse. warm bath, washed off, put on honey. later when checking i see that she pooped, so looked, protrusion still there...but the vent (where she pooped, they use the same opening for egg-laying, right?) is ABOVE this...

    Coop Temperature: 4° F

monday am it was about -10 in my coop. I don't heat at all, the coop is about 4 x 4 but the attached run is 10 x 4. The coop is not insulated, but the entire thing is wrapped in plastic to prevent drafts. I have 3 standard size hens and 2 cochin banties, and they do not seem to be bothered...

    solar lights in the coop

sorry, forgot to add height! it is about 3 feet at the edges, and the peek is about 4-1/2 feet. it is up off the ground by about 18 inches to allow for more run room (was patterned after the "playhouse coop" in the small coops of the coop section, but husband made it double-deep). But I do...

    solar lights in the coop

I guess I was looking at the "solar shed lights" and those are fluorescent, and fairly cheap. And a full charge they say lasts about 5 hours, which would preclude the need of a timer if it goes out by itself...I guess so long as it recharges fully the next day. Was HOPING it gave off some heat...

Post a pic of your UGLIEST bird!

haha! Dawn 419's Cochin! Wonder if it is the breed. we have a mottled cochin banty, and she looked exactly like that! We called her the Bag Lady! A very rough adolescence! The other 4 never had that phase- But she was just adorable because of it-"just out of bed" look! Phengel

    Ameracaunas picking on Jap

I have an EE, Black sex link, and rir, plus 2 cochin banties. (all pulletts, 15-17 weeks old). Actually the EE is probably more tolerant and at least watches where she is putting her big feet! The one banty stays behind the others in the food rush, still gets her own, but the silly "bag lady"...

    sod scraps?

new, new, new to posting. Have been "visiting" for weeks, though. love the site. we just sodded a portion of the yard and have sod scraps that i am hoping I can feed to the chicks-they are about 7 weeks old average (kind of mixed between 6 and 8) and are in a run-can't have them out because...
