Thank you for sharing this story about your chicken. Even though it is a sad story about her passing away, there is something beautiful about it. She chose to be outside in your back yard, a place she loved, where she lay down, closed her eyes and peacefully passed away. I know it's traumatic...
Thank you microchick for reminding me that chickens are masters at hiding their symptoms. He really was a great pretender until that last day, when I saw him open mouth breathing. Until then, the only thing different had been the sound of his crow. I am still a relatively new chicken owner (3...
Thank you everybody for your kind words! My roosters name was Daffy and I loved him very much. He was a super sweet boy, gentle with people and a great protector of his hens. He was so handsome and adorable with his fuzzy legs and rear end! He is greatly missed already.
Several weeks ago I posted a question about my rooster, stating that the sound of his crow had changed and asking if anyone had any ideas what it could mean. I had one reply saying that it could possibly be an upper respiratory infection, and that is what I was thinking.
Fast forward another...
Hi,
Yesterday I noticed my roosters 'crow' was not sounding the same. He almost sounds hoarse and like he's hitting the wrong notes, as if he's learning to play a musical instrument, and it sounds quite jarring (and funny...poor fella!) I'm wondering if he could have a cold? Or something...
Thank you!! I will do all of the above!! I have a veggie planter full of soil with no plants yet, I will let them in it so they can bathe. They were in it one day having a great time but they are not always in that part of the garden. I'll freeze grapes, one of their favorites, and fill...
I'm in California and we are about to have several days of 100+ degree heat, two at 111 and 110! I'm worried about my chickens and the best way to take care of them in the heat. They have plenty of shade and access to water, but I am still worried about them overheating. Any suggestions are...
Ok, so I took her to the vet yesterday and she was very sick! She was in severe respiratory distress, they immediately gave her oxygen, and long story short, drained 2 cups of fluid from her abdomen!! They think she has cancer of the reproductive organs, the fluid is being tested. If it is...
Thanks for your reply. It is not very hot here right now, past 3 days were in the 70's. It's going to cool off now so I will watch her to see if she changes. Since I brought her inside, she has had some food and water, which I'm hoping is a good sign. I'll keep checking in on her.
Hello everyone, I noticed a few days ago that one of my hens seemed to be breathing with her mouth open, as if she was taking little sips of air. Fast forward a few days and she is still doing it, she also has runny poo and her behavior is changing (not acting her normal self) letting me...
Thanks so much for your response. I am going to try giving him soft food, soaking his crumble in water so it is mushy and maybe easier for him to pick up, than the small hard pieces, and see if it makes a difference. I feel so bad for him that he is in pain. Do you know approximately how long...
Today I was feeding my chickens some sunflower seeds and noticed my rooster seemed to be having a problem picking up the seeds. As I looked more closely at him I saw his upper beak looked as if the top layer had cracked and peeled off, revealing a slightly pink color underneath (like a...
Yes, it is all contained in a compost bin with a lid. I did just remember reading that chickens are actually good for scratching and turning the compost, so it's a bit confusing. I'll just play it safe for now and leave out anything I am not sure about.
Thanks for your reply:)
I am just starting to compost and am wondering if I can add food scraps and garden clippings to the compost that I would not normally give to the chickens ( and that are on the lists of toxic to chickens) ? Once it is all broken down, would it still be harmful to them? They pretty much free...
Loved reading all your replies, my rooster is doing all the same things, except he's a beast with the mating, pulling feathers on the back of one hens neck and running all over the place trying to catch her with his beak open making heavy breathing sounds like some looney! Otherwise he's sweet...
Has anyone ever seen or heard of roosters feeding hens?
I have a Cochin rooster who takes treats (like grapes or worms) and holds them in his beak,
while making excited clucky sounds, and waits for one of the hens to come and take it from him.
I almost wouldn't believe it unless I saw...
