The only thing that concerns me is that tail--we have 2 EE hens and 2 EE roos--the hens have straight short tails, and the roos have long beautiful tails. The roos are awesome though--they eat out of our hands and do a great job of protecting the girls! I think your chick's face looks henish...
it doesn't look like her wings were clipped, it looks like they were chopped off!
I know! I know people clip one wing so they won't fly, but both wings are just as short as they could be, and her tail too--why would people cut off her tail??? Anyway, thanks so much everyone for the ID--I'm...
Some neighbors came over one night and asked us to come and get this 'mean biting rooster' out of their neighborhood...this is what we found...
The poor thing has been debeaked, and both wings and her tail were clipped. Her tail has started to started to grow back some, but not a whole lot...
I have a week old banty chick that keeps having feces stuck on her bottom. We've run into that before, and just clean the area with a warm paper towel, but while doing so, it seems as though her vent sticks out. I'm not sure if it's just swollen because she's having the problem eliminating, or...
I have two free range roos, and they are best buds. They follow us around like dogs--we don't actually pet them, but they stand right next to us, and have to be wherever we are! They like to stay on our porch when we are inside (wish they were potty trained!!), but have never shown aggression...
Certainly check for mites and lice, but to me it sounds more like you have a feather picker and that is probably a hen.
Yikes! I'd never thought about that, but it makes sense now! We added oats to their feed--we heard that diminishes the canabalistic tendency somehow, but there's probably...
I personally don't recommend hatching non pure eggs.
I have two barred rock hens that I was only planning on hatching eggs from with him, not all the hens.
So could it just be your particular roo?
I'm thinking it might be--he chases me in particular, and has scratched my 4-yr-old. I'm not...
I don't think it's mites--some of the hens are completely untouched, and his favorites are always bloody and/or bald. When we seperate the hens and thier tails grow back, when they go back to the chicken house, it's just a matter of time before they're worn off again.
What should I be...
We bought all our chicks last spring, and they've all grown up together. I have one rooster in with about 25 hens. He's a barred rock, and the hens are all different breeds. Last summer he killed a banty by breeding her to death. He has his favorite hens, and most of them have little or no...
We have a black banty cochin hen--she's our favorite, having the sweetest personality, and letting my 4 year old carry her anywhere he wants. Anyway, this morning, she was bald! Apparently, overnight, she's become the rooster's favorite too! When I was out there, he 'showed her a lot of...
Is the picked spot bleeding or is it just picked clean of feathers?
Occasionally it will have a few specks of blood, but it's mostly just picked clean. We added oats to their feed, as we heard that makes them not cannabilistic, and we watch him very closely--check him a few times a day.
One...
I have two polish crested chickens in my new flock of 33. One hen, and one roo. The roo is black w a white head, and the other chickens have pecked a bald spot on him. He gets frantic when seperated from the rest, and bent the wire of his cage, trying to get out. The hen has had no...
Thanks! I got them at the Orscheln's near my home, which gets their birds from a local hatchery. They came from a rare breed bin, where I also got two Silver Spangled Hamburg's from.
The pics were taken about a week apart--I'm guessing the first was at about one week old, and the second set, two weeks old. Any help is greatly appreciated--I have two of these chicks!
but they are bantams? Is yours a Large Fowl? It seems too dark to be a Gold Laced Wyandotte.
I don't think these are bantams--I have three other bantams, and they don't look anything like they do--but I know there are LOTS of varieties of bantams...I think the brown one does look like the...
Hi,
I'm brand new here, and a fairly new chicken owner. I got these guys out of a 'rare breed' bin, and have no idea what they are. I think they're 1-2 weeks old. Sorry the pics of the brown one are so bad! Any help is greatly appreciated! TIA!!!
