Hen picking out her own feathers

I searched for a a topic dealing with this issue. I have a black australorp who is chronically broody (but easily broken) and has plucked her breast and chewed the feathers off her back and shoulders. At first I thought it was the roo being rough with her, but it isnt. She does this to herself...

    moving pullets ouside in fall

I would like to move my pullets outside in two to three more weeks when they are 4-5 weeks old. What is the coolest nighttime temperature they should be able to tolerate without having to heat the coop? Daytime temps should be 65-75 degrees still by then. There will be 10 of them roosting...

    Medical Treatments Recommended by BYCers

Thank you. That was extremely helpful but now I'm not really sure how a chicken even swallows its own drinking water. :D

    Medical Treatments Recommended by BYCers

This is extremely helpful. I am new to keeping chickens and started building my "first aid kit" today. I have a question. Tylan 50 and Tylan Sol. Which do I need...do I need both....and how do you inject meds into a chicken's mouth to be sure they don't aspirate them?

    Peepers arrived yesterday!

My 12 chicks arrived yesterday after less than 24 hrs in the mail. Two were doing poorly...one of them passed and the other I fear will go today. I have offered sugar water, life-lite water, garlic water. I anticipated this but it's still a sad thing. The other 10 are doing quite well!

    Evaluate my integration plan

They will only sleep in the coop; otherwise they roam all day. And I'm trying to prepare for the death of one or more chicks by ordering slightly more than I want, as it seems fairly common for one or two to be DOA.

    That's a great idea. Thanks!

    Evaluate my integration plan

I currently have 2 mature laying hens, a red sex-link and buff orpington, who are relatively friendly. They are in a chicken tractor at night and free-roam in my fenced-in backyard during the day. They are relatively chill and mostly just hang out under the deck all day. Next week, 12 baby...

    Top Tips for New Chicks

My chicks are being shipped next week. I'm in NC too. :) I found the "basic chick care guide" here: http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/01/chicks-are-coming.html to be most helpful in getting prepared. I build the "duplex" out of two big plastic tubs by following her tutorial. I feel ready...

Advice re: when to order chicks

Thank you, that is helpful. I can't have more than like 12 chickens…I think that would be an upper limit. :)

Advice re: when to order chicks

After getting our feet wet with adult hens this summer, we are beginning construction on a permanent coop soon. We have three hens at the moment who are free-ranging and bedding down in the coop part of a chicken tractor at night, but this is not the greatest permanent solution, and I want more...

Scaly Leg Mites - Need Best / Easiest / Quickest Solution - Scaley

What a great resource. My buff orpington has a few tough, raised up scales right at her ankle. I am new to chicken keeping and purchased her as a laying hen. I thought maybe this breed just has different-looking feet than the others. Anyway, after a few blog posts alerted me to the issue, I came...

Best chicken breed for my climate? (Western NC)

Thanks. I guess the most important factors then are consistent layers with positive attitudes. Haha

Best chicken breed for my climate? (Western NC)

Thank you! These are great suggestions, and I'm already leaning heavily toward Australorps. I wasn't sure how they would do in the hot summer, though. This is very helpful. JadedPhoenix, I have two Leghorns. One needs to be culled soon…she isn't laying and I fear she is old and not doing...

Best chicken breed for my climate? (Western NC)

I live about an hour north of Charlotte, NC. While I consider this the "south" technically, we do get some cold days and it does generally snow 1-3 times in the winter. This winter was particularly cold, with single-digit temps for several nights. In the summers, it can get in the 90's several...

    bloody, soft-shelled egg

I have what I think is an older white leghorn who hardly ever lays and when she does, it's soft-shelled and usually broken by the time I find it. This morning in the litter there was just a shell-less mass (looked like there was a thin membrane with it) with what looked like blood clots mixed...

    chickens stepping on eggs

Thanks. We want to design and build a new coop, and this is something to definitely consider.

    chickens stepping on eggs

I have two nest boxes and four hens. Every week, several eggs are smashed in the nest boxes. Do they need more room, or what? I give them oyster shell and pine shavings in the boxes.

    what breed?

Update: you were all right. My friend and I put Lily in a small pen with one of their grown roosters, and the boys immediately flared their necks and charged each other. We intervened before anyone got hurt, of course. The whole thing took five minutes. The good news is...I have a co-worker...
