    Our "Oak Abode" chicken coop

Raccoons are a huge threat. If all you have is chicken wire, make sure all access to coop is closed every evening. A six foot fence won’t keep out a coon, possum or fox.

Hello! I am back and upgraded our coop!

Well, regarding heat sources, frost bite is a very real threat. I’ve had chickens for 14 years and the very first year, we used heat and our beautiful rooster’s comb got frost bite. It’s a fact that heat raises humidity and humidity with extreme cold causes frost bite. We removed heat and...

Winterizing Coop - Draft Free… but still has ventilation? Confused!

Posting a picture of our two coops. You can see the octagon gable vent on the blue coop. Here’s a video tour of both our coops. We also extended the chicken run which you can find a video of that on my channel as well. I LOVE your coop!

Winterizing Coop - Draft Free… but still has ventilation? Confused!

We live in Bellevue Nebraska. We don’t get near as much snow as we got 20 years ago but we do get high winds and -10 to -20 degree windchill. If you get cold winds, I’d recommend covering all the venting in the red circle because the venting at the roofline in green in plenty. Not sure I saw a...

    Any guesses on gender?

Who cares if it’s not a PURE americauna? I just listened to a podcast on the history of easter eggers and Aracauna and Americauna so I know there are differences and “male specific” feathering wasn’t one of them. HH237 - please keep us posted. I’m very interested to know what that americauna...

2 week old chick attacking me?

If it grew up and continued to be aggressive, that would be chicken dinner at my house. We had a barred rock that terrorized all the other hens. Needless to say, she didn’t do that ever again.

Introducing new roo - one bold hen

I’ve never introduced a roo to hens. Only had one Roo who grew up with my hens, but when we gave our roo to a small farm, he had to fight their existing roo for several days before they each claimed “their” space in the yard. Id say if most are fine, let him lose. He will dominate eventually
