One of my hens laid an egg today that was unique. It was very sticky when I picked it up, but dried by the time I got it in the house. There was a brown, dull sheen film over the shell. It can be rubbed off, but is on there pretty good. Is this something that I should be alarmed about?
We are really hoping so. We have a great rooster already and would have to either sell or eat him is it's another one. My kids are waiting to name her if it's a hen!
This little chick is about 8-9 weeks old. I think hen, but I'm not 100% because she's rather leggy. What's your educated guess? Oh yeah, she's a barnyard beauty cross between an American Game roo and a Australorp.
Thank you for your help. I wish I had the stomach to do a necropsy. I envy those who can. I'm not sure how my kids would take it if I sliced up their pet! She was a sweet girl.
I will not panic on this one since she's the only one. We have been on guard for bird flu since the nearest case...
I had a Black Cochin. She was 1 1/5 years old. She was healthy and moving normally yesterday. She sat on her roost up off the ground for night. This morning, my son went to open the coop. She was still on her roost, but wouldn't get down. He lifted her down and gave her some feed. She...
Thank you for your reply. I tried to candle them, but the shells are too dark and I can't see anything. I think I am going to give her some new eggs and trade them out. Hopefully she has stamina and stays broody! There was one point during her setting that she confused her nest with another...
I have a Black Australorp setting on six eggs. They are overdue by about three days. They all passed the float test with flying colors. They were all low-floaters. And yes, my girl tucked them all back under her without hesitation. If I candled them would I be able to see movement if they...
I need help identifying a predator.we've had two chickens killed within the last week. The bodies were relatively untouched. Barely a feather missing. Both kills happened in the evening. Our chickens are free range during the day and cooped up at night. We do have a dog. He has not killed a...
I was hoping someone would have an amazing, easy, cheap idea. Alas, there have been none. I will share what I did last year. I put up a fence that was about four feet high. I used hog paneling upside down so the smaller holes were at the bottom (my little bantam can get through almost...
Southeast side of the state as well. Are you new to chickens or been around them awhile? We are looking to increase our flock size again this year, but I haven't found many good pullets for sale yet. Winter was hard on our chicks.
I thought it would be great to find the forum that rounded up all of the chicken ranchers in South Dakota. This would give us a place to share problems, share encouragement. Also if you have birds that you would like to sell to a good home this would give you a better opportunity of finding a...
I took these with my phone so it's hard to get a good picture. This little girl is Clara. She is 9 months old and has had this swollen eye for about four months. I took her to a vet, no advice there. It is starting to hold her mouth open which makes it hard for her to eat and drink. My...
Here are a few I took today. I might go back out and try again. The flock wasn't feeling very photogenic today.
This is our rooster, Russel Crow.
The hen is named Gloria and the kitten is Tuck. Yes we name our chickens. Some people think that's weird, but I think it's fun! :)
