Thank you we have a large dog crate that we raised the chicks in until ready for the coop. We will try this. This is quite frustrating as we have had a variety of hens raised from chicks since 2014 and have never had a broody one before.
We have a Blue Lace Wyandotte that just turned a year old in May. Around that time she went broody and was that way for about 2 months. Late June she recovered and was fine, but now just the other day she went broody again! We cannot and do not want to have any Roosters. Our Rhode Island Reds...
Hi I am hoping someone can help us. Our 1 year old Blue Lace Wyandotte Hen is acting somewhat strangely. She has been on the nest quite a bit and laying. Today, even though the pen door was open to allow free ranging, she was in the pen with one of our Reds. Poppy (the Wyandotte) is making...
We have only one of our original flock of 6 hens left. We had 2 in late July, but we lost one of those to Fly Strike. This left Shirley all alone now, but we had 4 pullets that we raised from chicks still in our garage and decided to start integrating them with Shirley. They all now live in...
Hi, My name is Kathy. I just had one of my last 4 year olds die in my arms as I tried to do what I had read to try to make her feel better. I thought she had vent Gleet as her back end was really pretty gross looking and slimy looking. Her appetite and mood to range were both down. So after...
I have one Rhode Island Red that particularly loves to eat the mice our cats get but don't eat. She is healthy and has eaten several mice over the past several months. I wouldn't worry to much about it.
Our two Isa Browns, Thelma and Louise are our first layers. They started 8-1-14 and have had normal smaller eggs as is usual in the beginning, all laid in the nesting boxes in their coop. Yesterday my husband noticed Louise in the yard near a tree with from a distance what appeared to be an egg...
We got our first egg today! I believe it was one of our Isa Browns. They are a week younger than the Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks, but have been very noisy lately and crouching. Especially Thelma. Their combs and cheeky things (don't know what they are called) are redder than the rest...
My not quite 4 month old Barred Rock ate a tiny mouse yesterday. It shocked me! I didn't think they did that. The chickens were chasing her around trying to get it from her.
I am confused as to how does one figure out which hens are laying and which ones are not? We have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Isa Browns. The Isa's are 1 week younger than the others, and all are now about 9-10 weeks old. When they are ready to lay, how will we know who did and...
