I meant to document Sweetie's progress/recovery here as so many posts have been very helpful to me in the past.
Sweetie is still getting better week by week. When I look back at my original post I can't believe it was over 3 months ago!
At this point, she can eat and drink by herself. She...
I'm still not certain if it was botulism or poisoning. I did the Epsom salt flush and my girl was near death for a week or more. She has since sort of recovered. But is still partly paralyzed and I have to keep her separated or some others would kill her.
Best of luck to you Kohl. If you can...
Thank you for the links. IL residents need a vet prescription to buy syringes, so my guess is that is the reason no local feed stores carry procaine and all online stores require a prescription from a vet. My dog vet won't prescribe for me, and exotics won't unless I bring the chicken in. So...
When I got home from work, her poo had a lot more yellow yolk in it, so I think it's unfortunately the peritonitis, It's been so long since she laid an egg I just thought she was done and would live her life out showing the younger girls how to avoid danger (she's very good at that).
I just...
Thanks, I'll check out those links. I do have a newish chick, but kept her/him quarantined for 6 weeks until the middle of August. I am more concerned with the rest of my flock getting sick although I don't want Beaky to suffer needlessly. She's not wobbly, but walking slow. She stopped...
Beaky is 3.5 years old and started acting funny yesterday morning. I quarantined her last night and discovered she has diarrhea (picture below) and is not eating or drinking. She stands still for the most part, stretches her neck out from side to side and fluffs up her feathers.
There is no...
I can get kefir at either whole foods or an independent health food store in my area. I can probably find good yogurt there as well. I also get probiotics at either of those stores, I prefer the refrigerated ones. There are so many brands to choose from, I get the least expensive with the most...
I received the MSDS sheets for the chemical, it was the herbicide Triplet SF, containing Dimethylamine salt of ...acid (3 types). According to the sheet the effects would be mostly blindness or respiratory failure. Leading me to stick with the botulism diagnosis.
Sweetie is doing better this morning, She even flapped her wings. She also laid 2 soft shell eggs and I hope that means her body is cleaning itself out. Legs moving more, but unable to sit or stand yet. Very alert and talking to me this morning. Also preening herself. I hope we are on the...
She can still move her head and neck around fine and she had some slight movement in her wings. Her legs can move quite a bit, but they seem to spasm too. Her breathing is more labored now too.
Her stools are very watery now and her anus seems to be swollen and red and her feathers were...
Thanks. I'm not sure about the Mareks vaccine. She is 2 years old and I didn't ask when I bought her as a chick. I did suspect Mareks but after reading extensively about it I don't think that is it.
I'll read more on the egg-laying paralysis, but this started before her egg fell out today...
Thank you, I have been trying to find out exactly what was sprayed. I looked up organophosphate poisoning and I don't believe that is it.
My hens free range so it is possible that she ate something that gave her botulism. I read somewhere on here to add Epsom salt to her water and have done...
I think my hen Sweetie is suffering from either chemical toxicity or botulism. Do you know any home treatments that could help? There was weed spraying right outside my property over the last day or so.
Her legs seem paralyzed, yet when I hold her on my lap she has strength in them. She just...
