rabbits carry the fleas too. I use neosporin after the permethrine to smother the fleas, seems they fall off quicker

    Only using 1 nestbox?

Well, they are chicken after all. I always assumed they are competing to hatch their eggs in the prime location. When we had a rooster he would show his fav girl where to lay her eggs. Often I need to place them in the nest and show them they have other options. Fake eggs work well to fool them...

What bird tried to kill my chicken - video

Rumor around here (So CA) is that this hawk species can see a lizard on the ground as they fly around looking for food. If they spot a chicken, esp a smaller one, they will try again. We lost 3 to hawks before we installed aviary net over the area. Sorry for your loss.

    She's worse than a rooster!

Seems like you are rewarding bad behavior by feeding her when she acts like that?

    Ouch that must have hurt

My 2 y/o R&R hen was hiding under the bushes on Saturday and not eating, her crop felt lumpy. She "pigged out" on darkling mealworm beetles the night before. I gave her some calcium & oil (2 tums in yogurt and 2cc of coconut oil) and she stayed in the chicken condo for the night with the door...

Comment by 'AnniM' in article 'How to Handle the Ageing Process of Chickens'

The oldest hen we've had was 13, killed by a hawk likely because it became harder to run away. Now we have an avian net over their enclosure and hawks are less common. We have a 10 y/o and 9.5 y/o hens, the rest are much younger 3 years to 6 months. The older ones go in to the coop earlier but...

    Odd shaped eggs with calcium

My 2 y/o RIR hen has been laying these oddly shaped eggs for the last week. Today it was covered with calcium(?) bumps. They are all fed Layena with extras like fresh Kale, dried alfalfa and live & dried mealworms. They free range all day. The 2 Olive eggers have just begun to lay at 6 months...

Hen’s feathers being ripped out by another hen

Sorry but in my opinion/experience, once they learn that behavior, they need to move to a new home.

    Question about free-rangeing

Ours are allowed out into the yard around 7:00am until they go back to the barn at sundown. They seem very content and entertaining. Our yard (BarTina Park) is enclosed by Aviary Netting. After 14 years of chickens with NO problems the hawks became overly aggressive and killed 2 pullets. That...

    Is this leg mites

Hi to All Today I did the Epson salt soak and applied the Nu Stock and then returned my hen Betsy to the yard. Now her feet/legs are covered with a thick layer of dirt. Also the consistency resembled a thick salve rather than a lotion. Should I resoak and repeat tomorrow?

    Why is nobody laying?!

Try adding a probiotic mix (Egg Boost) to their water and give them yogurt with probiotics, this has worked well for my girls in the past, esp in the spring when the days are not quite long enough and its been cloudy.

Anyone else have a crowing hen?

There is a phenomenon called Spontaneous sex change where an old hen develops cock behavior. I have a 9 year old brown leghorn hen that only lays eggs in the spring. Her comb turns bright red and she crows in the morning for a week or so but then she starts to lay eggs for about a month. This...
