HI all...been looking around the forums and can't find an answer so I'll start a new thread.
Thinking about Guineas, especially with their propensity for eating bugs, especially TICKS...I got nailed by a tick 2 years ago and got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as a result...
So I really don't like...
:tongue Yuuck...the upper level is floored for all but one 12x12 section, of course where I park my Grand Cherokee...so the question is, is it a good trade off to get rid of the bugs and ticks in the yard or clean the vehicle?? :D
Thinking about getting some Guinea's to help control the insect problem at my place. My question is if I let them 'free range' during the day time will they 'roost' on top of autos or farm implements located in an open barn. I keep three of my vehicles in a 36x24 open barn.
Hi...there is a great hatchery near me that ships..I've used them multiple times...and they have Guineas Apr-Oct...min shipping is 25....

Good luck...
I've been seeing the straggler along the fence but when I approach her she skitters off. The entrance to the outside coop is right in line with her travel but she passes it up, all it would take would be one left turn, and heads for the fence that is in among the tree line...then when I go to...
I usually go out around 7 or 7:30 to settle them for the night. They come into the inside coop when they hear me...I feed them and top off the water and then drop the outside door to the outside pen. Then when I get up in the am, usually around 6:30 or so I go and pull up the door and let them...
Chickens have been in the coop since April 2015. That would make them about 16 months old.
They are Barred Plymouth Rocks.
The range was around the house and barn. We live on 20 acres. The barn is along a fence line on a 5 acre hayfield.
The house and barn are surrounded by woods on three...
Seems like this thread got a bit off topic, so I'll mention this....I read a lot of threads on free range before I attempted it last week. Most said the chickens should return to the coop at night and would lay in their usual place.
Well, I turned mine out on Monday....they were all over the...
Back on Oct 28th I posted that something had gotten into the outdoor portion of my coop and slaughtered 7 of my 8 Barred Plymouth Rocks. One survived although injured. I left her alone and she recovered but never laid another egg.
On Oct 10th, I got another 9 new day olds from the Nursery...
A guard Lama...sounds exotic..
I got new chicks (a week tomorrow) who are currently residing in the basement until they are a bit older. The one remaining hen seems to be doing fine at this point, but she is probably lonely, at least until I put the new chicks in with her....
Nothing trapped...
I'm not really sure...Usually I park in the barn and can hear them clucking when I go to work but haven't been doing that for the past couple weeks. I only discovered them at about 4pm when I went out to feed them after I got home. By that time they were cold.
Hi..no, they were in the chicken run.I found one with its head through the wire. I just don't know what actually happened, but, coons are definitely suspect and subject to my wrath...
I read yesterday that they sometimes work in pairs, one scaring the chickens to the edge and the other...
My hens got killed yesterday apparently by a raccoon. I'm wondering if it is too late in the season to start another flock?
I'd like to get some more Barred Plymouth Rocks like I used to have...
Any suggestions?
Checked trap this morning,nothing....no prints I could see in the flour I spread either.....
New question: Is it too late in the season to start some more chicks????
I checked again and found one spot, perhaps 2" high by maybe 5" wide at the bottom of the wire. The wire is 1 x 2 welded and there is a layer of regular chicken wire mesh on the outside of that, except in the one spot. Good idea about the flour. I"ll bait my Havahart and spread some flour around...
I came home today and went out about 4 pm to feed my chickens. I have/had 8 Barred Plymouth Rocks, not a small chicken.
One was in the nest box and was slightly injured. Another was lying on the floor of the coop. I went around outside the coop and looked in the enclosed outdoor run. The other...
Hershey's Coop
Hi, My name is Ron, It is my privilege to be married to a very understanding lady named Carolyn. We have three grown children and one new grandchild and a great Black Labrador named Hershey Kiss.(Her mother's name was Bodacious and her father was Chocolate Fudge so the name was a...
Recently one of my hens has started laying larger than normal eggs, but, the end of the egg shell is very thin..not the whole egg, just one end. Many times it has a 'swirly' look to the shell, and when I tap it with a finger nail it collapses.
I feed layer feed, they get plenty of light...
Sorry I wasn't more explicit...I picked up the two eggs outside the boxes.....I also built a 'trolley' a couple weeks ago with the intent of putting them into it one at a time and finding out which aren't laying....they are going into the freezer. One I caught on the nest and marked it with a...
