Been forever since I have posted...kind of been a busy second half of the year for me.
Just wanted to update for those who helped me when we had a predator raid the chicken coop back in Sept. We ended up loosing 4 of our 6 hens and one was badly injured as well and one just disappeared.
So, I...
Hi everyone I have been AWL (or absent with leave) for a while.
Amongst other things I spend almost 3 weeks in AZ visiting my brand new grd and grsons with hubby. While I was gone as I reported on FB I lost three hens to an unknown predator assumed to be a raccoon or fox...but who really knows...
Today it looks like 3/6 and I am wondering when those other three are going to get with it! LOL
The BO probably isn't ready yet but she is getting larger comb and wattles but they are still more pink than red. The other two a RIR and Black SL have lots of red and they both have nice sized...
Lisa: I forgot to tell you that B'Jewel has now laid two eggs and they have the cute freckles you described. They are nice and big and tasty too.
When she has most of her feathers back I will be sure to send you a picture.
Cathie
Rice I have! LOL
My yard is fenced but maybe it's not as tall as she is used to? It's 5 feet I think...
Today she enjoyed some leftover cake pieces as I was cutting one for my son's birthday and making a small two layer from one rectangle. The girls were mighty puzzled about it but all but...
OK, I will have to do that tomorrow if there isn't an egg by late afternoon.
They are all working on the relationship! LOL She tends to go off on her own but then again they have been together since almost the beginning so that makes sense. Wondering if she has any fav treats? So far she has...
OH, my goodness the whole thing with the bugs just creeps me out!
Funny, I was always told by vets that we don't have fleas in Utah as the climate doesn't let them breed etc. I know that animals can get lice or mites though. Had a kitten with ear mites and had to treat her for maybe 2 weeks...
Sigh...another soft eggshell which makes me wonder if someone is having problems. It's happened 4 days in a row I think...never in the next box always under their perch...
So today it's 1/6.
We also have brought a new girl in the flock and unless she is laying somewhere other than the coop...
LaCasa de Pollo (Lisa) and I met up yesterday evening despite the horrible traffic to allow me to adopt her hen Bertie who now will be called B'Jewell. We are happy to add her to our little flock and she is finding her way around here and her place in our flock.
This morning when I went out to...
I forgot to take a picture on the first day of laying for my Red/Gold SL Janet but here are her first two eggs with a store bought extra large
Well done Janet!!!
JWidd great question...I have seen lots of references to worming here and wonder the same thing...
Heading to SLC in a bit to pick up a BR hen from Lisa to replace my rooster who wasn't allowed in the city limits here in AF...crossing my fingers that she gets along with the others in the...
2/5 Yesterday and this time the Pullet Bullet layer Maudie, made a nice large egg...maybe trying to compete with the new layer, Janet, who has laid two nice large eggs.
I seem to have afternoon layers so still waiting on today's results.
Ridgerunner: Thanks so much for the post. It helps to understand a bit more about how my girls might be functioning LOL
I didn't know where the color comes from so that was new one for me!
Yesterday Maudie, the one who has been laying the small eggs layed one the same...
OK, I just wondered with the second layer with much larger eggs. I will just keep and eye on the girls and see how Maudie's eggs look.
She is pretty regular for eggs so I shouldn't complain right?
Well RJ, I think your pic of Rooster Cogburn is a wonder pic and would think he would be a fine subject for the calendar but I am new so no insight! LOL
hgillins: It seems that little guys have those high fevers and then before you know it they are back to "normal". All of my grkids have...
I am a new to chicken raising so all of the is new to me.
My largest SL started laying eggs quite early at about 15-16 weeks old and on the whole lays 4-5 eggs a week. She has been laying about 2.5 weeks and the eggs are what I would call small to medium and a nice light brown.
Just wondering...
