Utah!

Update: Ohh what a stressful day trying to get this lil girl to pull through. She's still alive.
I discovered that she is VERY heavily infested with the bugs, much worse then I thought! I saw some when I went through her head poof but she's so fluffy I couldnt see just how bad until I got her wet. I decided to do the soapy dawn bath and once I got her head wet I saw just bad bad she was covered, it was discusting! Both live & eggs caked all over the top of her head, going down the cheeks and down the neck. Not so much on the body or vent though that I could see. It was all on her head! I as carefully as I could let the water pour over her head, trying to avoid her face/nose. I kept her in there until the bugs stopped moving. I was told it was a great way to kill them instantly and it seemed to work. Im pretty sure they are all dead now but she's completely covered with dead bugs/eggs now all over her head. I decided the only way to get down there to see & manage the bugs was to cut her beautiful crest off :( So I ended up giving her a buzz hair cut. I just wanted to cry while I was cutting it off but I figured it's better then leaving all those nasty things in there, and better then her dying. I tried to use the tweezers to pull out most of them but shes still caked in a ton of these dead bugs & eggs all over her head. But at least they appear to be dead. How important now is it to get all those out? Her crest is completely gone now so I can see all of them, but there's far too many to count :( I blow dried her and let her rest. Later this evening I went to cal ranch and got a goat drench syringe thingy to fill her crop with fluids. I got that, some vitamin/electrolite tablets, and two different types of tick, lice killer. One is a powder dust called Hi-yeild, and the other is a liquid one called poultry protector. I just got both. When I got home, she was still laying in the spot completely inactive and pooping in the same spot (on herself). I broke off maybe a fourth of a tablet of this vitamin and deluted it 2cups warm water. The water was a yellow color. I hope it wasent too much vitamin. I was told the biggest priority was to get fluids into her crop immidiately. So I filled the syringe half full, and carefully inserted this long syringe down into her crop and emptied it. I watch videos how how to do it, and I hope I did it correctly without hurting her. I was told to wait a couple hrs and then give her an egg yolk the same way, because she needs the nutrients. She hasent moved at all, and must be very anemic. She opens her eyes, and makes little noise when I pet her but she's still very lathargic. Not sure what the next step is now.

Oh Briana, this is so crazy to happen, huh? Her pretty hairdo, of all places! Poor girl...she is lucky to have such a good chicken mama taking care of her. Getting those nutrients in her was a good move for sure. I am crossing fingers, eyes, and toes it all works out! The poultry protector can be used as a spray or dip so you could spritz that on her tomorrow to make sure those eggs are totally dead and don't hatch. Then when she dries you could dust her down....then you know the bugs are totally dealt with and can just keep those fluids going in...and focus on her lethargicness. I hope she does not have an illness on top of the bug problem! Is she sneezing, breathing noises, anything respiratory at all?

OH, my goodness the whole thing with the bugs just creeps me out!
Funny, I was always told by vets that we don't have fleas in Utah as the climate doesn't let them breed etc. I know that animals can get lice or mites though. Had a kitten with ear mites and had to treat her for maybe 2 weeks with an ear treatment but I don't even remember much about that.

Lisa: Sorry I missed your text. No eggs yet from B'Jewell unless she isn't laying in the coop nest boxes. Wondering if you have had problems with her escaping over the fence? I noticed she has her wings clipped and the first day she escaped into my front yard and today son caught her on top of the fence. Now, granted we don't have tall fences but so far the others haven't shown interest in going outside the backyard.
I did get a soft egg this morning but it seems to be a regular occurrence with my young hens. I got two egg songs but only one egg today and I don't think it was from the egg singers! LOL

Sorry RJ you had such a bad experience with the county fair. I kind of know how that feels when I put a quilt in the Utah County Fair last year and hated how it was displayed...plus got knocked down for the dumbest things. That's OK I just did it for the experience so I can say I have checked this off the list as a quilter.

She does like to explore, very curious. She stayed pretty close to the coop though when she was out in the yard here...but flew up onto the roof a few times. She also tried to hop into the little apple tree next to the coop and kept knocking apples off. If she free ranges during the day she might lay eggs in bushes and places so be sure to keep your eye out, she kept going in our dog house and laying eggs when she first started  Are the others accepting her ok? I hope so!

OK, I will have to do that tomorrow if there isn't an egg by late afternoon.
They are all working on the relationship! LOL She tends to go off on her own but then again they have been together since almost the beginning so that makes sense. Wondering if she has any fav treats? So far she has had bread...which they all love....some string cheese, and scratch grains oh yeah and some fresh corn.
I am worried that she might wander into the street or get hit by a car because sometimes people just go a bit too fast going and coming in our cul de sac. Crossing my fingers that she gets used to the yard and what it has to offer.

Here they have been getting watermelon, or at least the rinds with some good stuff still on it...zucchini too. Also rice, we always cook up extra and she seemed to be the first one at the scrap bowl for the rice. And of course the corn! I hope she sticks close, here they are fenced in so she must not be used to the open border!

I dont think there's any respiratory problem cause I dont hear any odd wheezing or sneezing or anything. She just lays there motionless. The only time she breaths funny is if water goes down wrong or something. I think I messed up when I tried to give her a raw egg directly into her crop a few mins ago. I was told this syringe was a great tool but it has a weird shape in the tube and its hard to get it to stay straight while trying to get her to keep her throat straight and not move while its in. I managed to get the egg down into her but could tell she was uncomfortable and tried to move, and on the way back out the egg kinda came back up, and made her do that weird open mouth pause thing where she opens it for a second, then closes it, then opens it then closes it sorta like a gasp of some sort it seems. Not sure what that is exactely but it made me feel like I didnt do it correctly that time, and makes me afraid to have to keep force feeding her that way when I dont know what im doing other then seeing videos. But I was told I needed to do it like that to get it directly into her stomache since she was so anemic so I just did what I was told. I just wish someone could take this poor lil girl off my hands and nurse her back to health for me cause its stressing me out so much. I want her to pull through, i really like her and dont want to give up so im spending so much of my emotional time on trying to help her, and putting off getting last minute things ready that I still need to get done before baby comes in less then two weeks. Thats been stressing me out more then anything because I have had no energy at all to finish everything up, so the little energy I have has been going to her. I'll do what I can cause I have to and I wont just let her die without a fight, its just taking alot out of me right now. I feel so exhausted :(

I haven't read all the posts so don't have the full scoop ILuv, but do you have her under a heat lamp? If so that greats, if not pull out your brooder lamp. When animals are this distressed they cannot maintain their own body heat. I have a big pet aquarium that I use (but a tote would work fine). It keeps the crawleys contained, you can DE the bedding, etc.'

I'll try to go read my unread posts when I can, I have nearly a 100.

I hope she pulls through for ya!

I had a lonely silky that came as part of a small coop I purchased. Didn't realize she had mites until we were in the car headed home. Red mites all over my daughter that held her, car, etc (and OH my dh was mad! lol). Once home I figured I would lose her if I did nothing so I went for broke. She got a bath in dog bug shampoo, dawn, and vinegar. She was really good and then she lived in the aquarium for a month with DE so I could break the bug cycle (I did take her out to play with and inspect). She survived all that fine and went on to lay eggs.

Needless to say, I asked for my money back and didn't get the coop.

I had the best time with the chicken judging at the fair today. I entered 10 chickens so I could get a free parking pass. Here are the results of the judging and yes I won big My white frizzled Serama Psyco was reserve champion. The judge loved him. If his temperment was better he would have won best. but I'll take second best champion He is not named Psyco for nothing. I also won best silkie with the gray girl I bought in Arizona, I won best cochin with the frizzled cochin pullet, I win best sizzle with a black sizzle girl I raised from Hercules, All of those wins auctually beat several birds in the judging queue, I also won Best dUncle with my Mille flor. But she was the only Duncle so that wasn't really a win. I'll take some pictures after they hang the ribbons so you guys can see them. Also I bought the cochin girl at chickenstock from a little girl who was selling her. Does anyone on the list know how to reach her I wanted to tell her how well she did.

WTG!!!!! So happy for ya.
