Utah!

I dont think there's any respiratory problem cause I dont hear any odd wheezing or sneezing or anything. She just lays there motionless. The only time she breaths funny is if water goes down wrong or something. I think I messed up when I tried to give her a raw egg directly into her crop a few mins ago. I was told this syringe was a great tool but it has a weird shape in the tube and its hard to get it to stay straight while trying to get her to keep her throat straight and not move while its in. I managed to get the egg down into her but could tell she was uncomfortable and tried to move, and on the way back out the egg kinda came back up, and made her do that weird open mouth pause thing where she opens it for a second, then closes it, then opens it then closes it sorta like a gasp of some sort it seems. Not sure what that is exactely but it made me feel like I didnt do it correctly that time, and makes me afraid to have to keep force feeding her that way when I dont know what im doing other then seeing videos. But I was told I needed to do it like that to get it directly into her stomache since she was so anemic so I just did what I was told. I just wish someone could take this poor lil girl off my hands and nurse her back to health for me cause its stressing me out so much. I want her to pull through, i really like her and dont want to give up so im spending so much of my emotional time on trying to help her, and putting off getting last minute things ready that I still need to get done before baby comes in less then two weeks. Thats been stressing me out more then anything because I have had no energy at all to finish everything up, so the little energy I have has been going to her. I'll do what I can cause I have to and I wont just let her die without a fight, its just taking alot out of me right now. I feel so exhausted :(
Do you have a health store near you? Good local honey mixed with a bit of water will be better for her than sugar water. It's easier on the system and can prevent bad gut flora from overwhelming her good gut flora during this time of stress. Use a dropper to get small amounts this mixture into her as often as you can during the day.

I went to the fair today and saw Lisa's birds and RC. I think your fury is founded RJ. I walked past the rabbit cages and I watched one take its last breath. They hadn't bothered to put a water line to it's cage. When I walked over and mentioned it to the man sitting at the desk, he scowled at me and shooed me away saying he'd check on it. LAZY BUM!! It made me quite angry. Someone is going to be awfully sad tonight when they find that their precious baby died. I really love Box Elder's fair. Their poultry building has air conditioning. I grew up in Cache Valley and should have my allegiance there but I can't help but think the animals are better cared for at the BE fair.

RJ- Your RC was the most beautiful there!!

Lisa- I had to go and find Ernie he has the sweetest little eyes. I also got a kick out of your showgirl! Such cuties!!
oh how sad! :( ya know, I hate saying this... but I wonder if there is grounds for suing the fair for not hiring decent people to take proper care of the animals.... Did any of you happen to take pictures/video of the lack of care?

No, I didn't take a picture or video. I am irritated with the fair worker but some blame has to go to the owner of the animal. You can't just take your animal to the fair on Wednesday and forget about it until Saturday night. The owners of the rabbit should have checked on it and noticed that there wasn't a water line going into its cage.

Ruralpearls

Mmmmmm, thanks. Would have been fun to see you, I've thought of driving out your way more than a few times, we are sort of rural too. We like that a great deal. I have to wonder how many shows round the state are judged in secret, as is ours. The public and or exhibitors are not allowed in the barn during the judging. I see those disinterested folks whom are charged with taking care of and protecting our livestock, chowing down on a Millbuger and nursing a 64 ounce cola, and they are in their element, please don't bother us, well to do anything. Bumzzz is a kind word for them. The chicken guy pulled out his program and showed me his picture in it. I guess I am impressed, he said he is in charge of all Cache County poultry, I said really? To whom do I take my complaint. I guess as a person, I am not impressed with the pecking order of persons in the county. And if he is the head bird we are in deep chicken poo.

If you are so put out in doing your 'thing' at the fair, it might be time to turn it over to someone else, just saying.

I would love to have you out some time!! It is quite a drive but it really is a peaceful place. I love sitting in my front yard and only hearing my ducks, turkeys and wild birds making noises. No traffic!! Heck, we ought to have a big BYC get together. Do a BBQ/ meet up at a park somewhere in a central location for everyone. :)

Iluv, sounds like you are doing all that you can..did you see Pawtraitart's comment?

Lisa, Austin will come home on Oct. 23rd. Just got the info last week. He will be home for the holidays!

So..... I think my second hen started laying, and she laid a soft shelled egg.... when I went out to check on them this morning, they were all still in the coop (it's usually open so they can go to the run), and so I peek in on them, and they're all devouring the soft shelled egg!!!

I really hope they don't become egg eaters! I have some wooden eggs in the nest boxes, maybe they'll try pecking at those, and realize that they won't break.

Poo. No champions this year! Oreo, that did so well last year, got beat in breed even by the other Polish. No Class winners either this time.

My white Silkie got 1st in breed, there were some other whites there...I think Yoshi got best in breed (roo), my husband went down and brought the news back and was not completely sure, I will have to go down and take a looksee

Not sure how my Showgirl did. My Houdan got best in breed (and only in breed! haha)

Overall, I am happy with that

RJ let us know how you did! I will have to peek at yours when I go down tonight.
Congrat's

Some of the eggs I started getting from Sphinx' birds this week. Keepers ! The one on the far right is actually pretty deep tan for comparison.
Nice eggs

Well… I entered Rooster Cogburn in the Cache County fair this morning. I was first in line and did not want to be late to our first show. I am a bit concerned with the fair folks, the ones taking care of the birds, or NOT as the case might be.

I went back to check on RC about 3 in the afternoon and they had still not bothered to feed them. I just don't understand why you would take a bird in, and then keep them from feed most of the day. They were just getting around to putting water in the empty cups. I don't like this, I don't think.

They were moving birds from cage to cage, the same kid would grab this one or that and they had no sense of not spreading 'whatever' from bird to bird or cage to cage. A haphazard affair at best, a sham on the exhibitors is how I feel. I borrowed a small handful of corn from a pig guy for RC, he is or was the only bird with anything to eat that I saw, and I looked at most of them several times. Lisa, I saw your birds.

Anyway I hope the morrow brings good tidings for RC, I overheard several folks say how nice he looked, lets hope the Judge sees the stately manner in which he holds himself,

RJ

I agree! I am terrified of the handlers. I also hate watching the kids go from cage to cage, sticking their fingers in to see if the bird will bite. I had no sicknesses last year, so I hope we fare ok this time too! I try to get in to check on mine as much as possible, and take treats in for them. Last year all they did was throw handfuls of feed (more like scratch) in on the floors of the cage a couple times per day. I saw RC when we checked in, he was looking pretty spiffy, right there when I walked in the main door. Good luck RJ and RC!

Thats what is good about the Box Elder fair. You put your birds in their pens and they are nevered moved and they are water and fed and the building is air conditioned and the Trophies are a lot bigger

GBO: What did you put in this year? There were some nice bantams, I figured some of those had to be yours! They have only been putting the scratch on the floors of cages again this year as far as I could tell. I super hate the moving them from cage to cage, might have to check out the BE Fair next year, I have never been!
