Welcome! My wife and I decided to copy our neighbor and start keeping chickens. We are your typical city folk who have transplanted ourselves into the country on an acre of land. So we really appreciate backyardchickens.com for all the helpful information. I will simply use this space to tell...

Quote: He's an EE. He's the same fellow that you see in my lap in my avatar. Just grown up now. The camera is a Kodak EasyShare CX7525. I'm happy with it but I really want a fancy DSLR.

    Wierd Eggs

I got some wierd eggs today. At the 12:00 is the largest one I have ever gotten. I wish I had a scale. At 3:00 is a normal egg. At 6:00 is the one with a bulge around the "equator". And at 9:00 is one with "stretch marks" - little ridges that run the length of the egg. How wierd is that?

    Where Angels Fear to Tread

Quote: I only buy Purina Layena feed and oyster shell. The Layena goes into a 30 lb metal feeder so they never run out, and it has to be filled about every 3 days for my 23 chickens. They have the run of my 1 acre and spend much of the day scratching around in the grass. I also cook unused...

    Do chickens feel pain?

I think the pain of minor surgery or stitches would me much less than the pain of a bad infection or slow death from an impacted crop. So if you were to decide to treat them yourself without anesthetics, I would not be critical. Not all of us can afford to get a vet to do these things.

Chickens and rain. Will they get sick if they get wet?

They can take rain quite well. Just make sure they have dry sheltered places to go when they want to.

Do easter eggers and wyandottes usua;;y have to be older to lay?

I have Production Reds, Silver and Gold-lace Wyandottes, and EEs. At 30 weeks, all the Reds have been laying well, but only a few of the Wyandottes and EEs are laying.

    No more floor eggs!

Nice of you to help the big girl out. It must be hard to jump that high when you have an egg to lay. My nest boxes are high too. Although the hens weren't having trouble with the height, they could not tell from the ground which boxes were occupied. So I found an old bench from a picnic...

Is this broody behavior? Or is she egg bound?

She might gave been almost egg-bound but apparently she got over it. My hens spend quite a bit of time in the nest box, and I never get them out. I figure they either haven't laid yet or need the rest. None has gone broody on me yet.
