Thanks for your responses! They are fed layer feed already, and they also have access to oyster shells. I will try putting an egg in the nesting box as "inspiration" and see if anything changes. Thank you!
We have three hens and NONE of them are currently laying! We haven't seen an egg in nearly three months! I know that they don't lay as often in cooler months, but we've had a warm fall (avg. 65 degrees) and it is only just november. We haven't seen an egg since the end of August! What is going...
Our Ameraucana pullet has started making strange sounds today. She's always kind of squawked but we just assumed it was her "voice", but today she's started "whining" constantly. It's like she's wheezing because she does it every time she breathes in and out. I've listened to her breathing by...
Our chickens use just regular old dirt in our yard (it's pretty unexciting, but they love it!) We like to mix in a little bit of diatomaceous earth every once in a while. Not too much, though, because it can be irritating to their lungs.
From what I understand, they could just be too hot even with the fan going! That would be my best guess, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be more certain.
I have had this problem too, recently. We got 2 new pullets and our original pullet, Batman, has been kind of bullying the newbies so they can't sleep on the roosts but rather they hide out in the nesting boxes. They're just starting to lay, so I've opened up access recently to the nesting boxes...
I would love to try this! I grow rosemary, mint, and basil so maybe I'll just round up some random leaves and throw it it there! I bet it will smell nice! My girls are just starting to lay...so maybe it will be inspirational to them...?
We introduced ours a little younger than yours and I was shocked at how quickly they picked it up. The red on the nipple attracts them to peck so they kind of just go for it. I would leave the original waterer in there too until you see them really pecking.
I definitely recommend the nipple system. They are so easy to customize and you can even find "heater wrap coil thingys" (definitely not a technical term!) for use in colder months!
