She has access to the same oyster shell that the other girls are eating, and they have been laying every day. This one, the one thats not laying was for several weeks laying every day. As an update, about an hour after her warm bath last night she did lay an egg. A very tiny egg about 1/4 the...
I have one bird thats not laying. She seems to have an egg in her belly, but its soft. she hasnt laid and egg in about a week. I've tried giving her a soak in warm water for about 20 minutes, no change. She is eating and drinking fine, and using the bathroom, and all looks normal. The other 2...
They dont seem to be stressed at all, they seem quite happy. Relaxed for the most part unless they are chasing a fly or in the dustbath, then they get a bit wild. I put some straw in with them and so far they seem to be completely ignoring it.
They have always been close to a window. Maybe start giving them a few mealworms every day and see if that helps? I have the dried ones, no one around here stocks live but all the birds go nuts for the dried.
We have 5 Japanese quail, 4 hens and 1 roo. 2 hens are 12 weeks old, 2 are 6-7 weeks old. We are getting concerned because not one hen has produced an egg yet. We have oyster shell in their enclosure, which measures 4' by 1.5' with an elevated feeding area and elevated sandbox area. they have...
So I thought I'd share some pictures I have taken of our birds and our setup. Hope you enjoy!
Our roo, Rusty.
The 4 girls, Woody, Tweety, Daisy and Roadie.
Our home made incubator, lights on but nobody's home!
With the light off so you can see in better.
I have a wooden dowel glued...
so this morning we had to change things around. the two older hens are showing signs of over breeding. they are both missing feathers from the very tops of their heads. we seperated the roo for an hour and observed them, and they werent going after each other at all, put the roo back in and...
build something random for your birds. (thats how in the past 3 days ive ended up with a home made incubator, candling lamp, 2 new enclosures and a cool ramp/diving board that my hens like to climb and jump off into their sandbox)
right now we have the 2 new hens in a seperate cage siting right next to the other one, so ill just leave it be. they have allready had what my fiance calls "chirping wars", but they seem to be ok with each other thus far.
I did notice on the 2 younger hens that they dont seem to have all...
my fiance and I keep our quail indoors, and we now have 1 male and 4 females. We have found that a good way to control odor is a mix for the dust bath of 8 parts sand and 2 parts dried coffee grounds works very well for keeping the odor of the birds themselves down. another thing we do is add 2...
Ok so upon some suggestions here we have just got 2 more females. These are 3-4 weeks old. is introducing them to the same enclosure as the current hens (7 weeks) and roo a good idea, or is it best to wait till the new hens reach 6-7 weeks?
the male is actually 2 months old, versus the hens only being 7 weeks. could that make a difference? We also just picked up a full spectrum light today, I was using just a regular 13watt cfl before.
One confusing thing is that the male (we named him Rusty, two guesses as to why) exhibits very little interest in the hens. Day 1 and 2 he went after them nearly continusouly but now (day 5) he doesnt go near them in that way. the hens are 7 weeks old and no laying as of yet. They also wont...
Hi there! My fiance and I recently bought 2 Japanese quail as pets (was her birthday gift) and we have fallen in love with these adorable birds. We were planning on just having the 2, but have decided to start breeding them as well so we now also have a male, and we want to be sure we are doing...
