@Tonyroo yeh I guess especially doing it on my own. If I had someone who was in it with me and willing to cull them for me I suppose it'd be easier but I don't. It'd all be on me and I'm not sure I can actually kill a beloved pet chicken even though it's in their best interests...sigh I wish it...
Yeh maybe it's not for me then. Think I'm too sensitive and freak out at any sign of illness..I just really wanted to help the battery hens but maybe am not the one to do it.
I suppose I could get my brother to do it but I don't like to ask...surely by the time they are ill the meat is no good? I'm just thinking of keeping them as pets or for eggs and rescues.
I think I'd be at the vet every week if I had a large amount of battery hens it'd cost a fortune. I did...
@Sussex19 thanks that's a good idea, I just don't know if I can go through with actually doing it. Then if you don't fully commit out of fear you might make them suffer whilst doing it? I hate this aspect of chicken keeping! I never knew what to do before and it's the only thing that stopped me...
Hi all,
I don't keep chickens atm but I used to in the past. I got sick of taking them to the vet all the time (I only had a few in the first place but they were hybrids and would get ill after a few years which all happened around the same time).
My new idea is to take in lots of battery...
Thank you! That puts my mind at ease a little :) I worry about every little thing now because of how well chickens hide illness. I've taken them to the vet before thinking they're just a bit under the weather to find they're really ill and nothing they can do so now I panic at anything...
Thanks that's really helpful :) Now I'm just wondering if she's finishing molting or coming into molt though-she's been quite stressed lately since her sister died-they did everything together and I think she's really missing her. Possibly the stress has brought on a molt (because I read they...
Yes! I would say it pretty much looks like that rooster, but it doesn't show up so much or look so bad on my hen as shes a light orange colour. We don't have a rooster so it's not from that or getting pecked. Do you think they are still growing back from her moult 3 months ago or shes moulting...
Hi, I already tried on my phone but they didn't come out very clear, you couldn't really see what I mean. They basically just look like half grown out feathers with bits of white on them on the top of the neck.
Hi all,
My Buff Orpington looks a bit strange on the back of the neck area-like the feathers are not completely grown and can also see some white tips. Is it just from moulting? Sh was moulting about 3 months ago but the rest of her looks fine her neck feathers just look a bit odd. Is it just...
I have a chicken with scaly leg-I don't think it's that bad just a couple of scales raised on each leg. Thing is I was treating her for it a few months ago (I wasn't sure if she had it or not since she has such long feathers it was hard to tell but others in my flock had had it so I guessed she...
Hi so I've been giving her scrambled egg and tofu and she seems to be doing good now. She's also been having sweetcorn which she loves-not so keen on the tofu or banana. I also tried sardines but she didn't eat that but may try again as she was off her food one day last week. Most of my shopping...
I need more help! My other bird is not perching now either! What is going on. Is this a sign of depression/loneliness? Is she sick the same as my other bird? Ahh this is a nightmare!
Azygous-what special feed did you give your bird that got her to perk up after her moult? I'm going down...
Update-we had to have her PTS-the vet is pretty sure she had ovarian cancer. For some reason I missed your post earlier Azygous, not sure how but those were some good tips I missed. I didn't check her weight. When the vet showed me her breast bone I was shocked she was so bony. She was all...
Up early can't sleep. Going to check on her in a couple of hours-if still not roosting will try and get a vets appointment. I hadn't thought of the other chicken carrying anything-didn't realise that could be the case. I've had a necropsy done before on another hen and it wasn't too...
Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I think sadly we will be having her PTS tomorrow or Thurs. I have always wormed although it's been a few months since I last did it.
Trouble is I only have 2 chickens left and decided once I lost one of them I would try and rehome the other as I do not want to keep...
Hi all,
I have a poorly Buff Orpington hen-when I went down this morning early she was not roosting and was just standing in a corner puffed up like a football. When my other hen came down she did move and go to eat but didn't really eat much. She has been out and about but obviously something...
^^ Bless that's so funny, how cute!
Now my issue is what to do with my 2 remaining birds (my two Buff Orpington chickens escaped the attack). I don't really even want to go into their pen anymore and it's really big for just two birds now. I have been thinking about selling them for a while...
