Putting chicken to sleep

If both euthanazia and vets visits are not right for you, then maybe chickens are not right for you either.

Can you find another chicken keeper in your area that can help out with culling in exchange for the meat?
I suppose I could get my brother to do it but I don't like to ask...surely by the time they are ill the meat is no good? I'm just thinking of keeping them as pets or for eggs and rescues.

I think I'd be at the vet every week if I had a large amount of battery hens it'd cost a fortune. I did take my others to the vet but it was quite a way to take a sick chicken (had to go to a special avian vet) and some customers there thought I was crazy taking a chicken or duck to the vet lol.

I think you should steer away from battery hens. They are bred to live short, disposable lives & by the time they become rescues they are @ the end of their alloted time & prone to reproductive issues, & things like cancers & tumors. You would probably have to cull most within a very short period of time ~ or spend ages @ the Vet. If I were you I would rethink my chicken keeping options & go for something more likely to be hardy & long lived. IME a lot of bantams fall into this category as they aren't usually high production breeds.
Yeh maybe it's not for me then. Think I'm too sensitive and freak out at any sign of illness..I just really wanted to help the battery hens but maybe am not the one to do it.

I'm glad you put some thought of the outcome of those potential hens.

Your choice is the right one. It's more work and care having those types of hens.

@Tonyroo yeh I guess especially doing it on my own. If I had someone who was in it with me and willing to cull them for me I suppose it'd be easier but I don't. It'd all be on me and I'm not sure I can actually kill a beloved pet chicken even though it's in their best interests...sigh I wish it was easier.
